The Responsibility Of Homeless People

Decent Essays
When I see a homeless person in the streets, I feel pity for them. Everytime I see one, I honestly always hand them a dollar or two. I know a dollar or two is not much of a help, but it’s better than not giving anything at all. Some people would argue that if you hand them money they would just spend it on a cigarette or a beer. However, not all homeless make the wrong choices, some actually beg for money to buy food in order to survive. If I refuse to give, I would feel an extreme guilt for not giving when I can. They beg people for help, because their family turned their backs on them or they don’t have any family left. If I could afford to help them get back on their feet, I would.

I believe that is the government’s responsibility

In the article, “Homeless, Mike Dick Was 51, Looked 66,” author Kevin Fagan stated that “The nation needs to commit, emotionally and economically, to saving these older folks” (321.) The older folks referred to in the article are homeless people that live across the United States. Fagan maintained that the nation can do better in terms giving back to the needy, especially considering the wealthy of the nation. However, what Fagan failed to mention in the article is what the homeless are not doing for themselves. Long time homelessness is a predicament that can only be blamed on the homeless because people that wind up homeless for whatever reasons are capable of changing their situation.…

Homelessness from a Social Lens Homelessness is a growing concern in the United States, as 7-12 million adults have been homeless at some point in their lives (Markos, Lima, Homelessness). An important question that has been presented is, why should the government adopt financial aid as a solution to homelessness in American cities? This is a very crucial question to think about, as homelessness continues to grow everyday. Overall, it is shown that once people become homeless it is nearly impossible for them to return to their previous lives. From a social lens, adopting financial aid will change the way that all groups of society are affected by homelessness.…

We have learned largely by life experiences that hard work payoff, but when we are broken by hard times, some hard working individuals seem to forget their knowledge and self-worth. this day felt like the best day of my life until I came across a man wearing a small t-shirt which looks like belongs on a 4 year old and very filthy sweatpants. He looked like he hasn't taken a shower in months. The man was just laying on the side of the bridge holding a sign that was barely visible and it said “anything helps. I want to be happy.” I have always been very hesitant when giving money to the homeless because I did not know what they would use it on, the thing…

A police officer refused to arrest a homeless person for sleeping in a private garage. Despite a local ordinance that clearly forbids such behavior, the officer felt it would be unethical to make an arrest in that situation unless the homeless person was disturbing the peace. The officer’s supervisors were unsympathetic to his ethical stance, and he was suspended from duty without pay (Gaines, and Miller 17). It is often said that ethics are rules or standards that govern people when a situation arises. Ethics is defined as the moral principles that governs a person’s perception of right and wrong.…

For many years, society has looked down upon the homeless because of their social status. People have been given the notion that the homeless are in the situation that they’re in because of many taboos that society looks down upon like alcohol, drugs, and gambling. People should be showing the homeless compassion and offer help, instead are met with mean actions and awful words towards their way of life. Not all homeless people are in their situation because of addictions. There are a great number of homeless people out there who are veterans that struggle with mental disorders that they received from past wars, such as PTSD, that do not allow them to live a normal life.…

Social problems are defined as behavior that strays away from the standards and norms of society. People take two different approaches for blaming social problems, “person-blame” and “system-blame”. A pro of the person-blame approach is recognizing that people and their actions are not entirely based on their environment and that people hold responsibility in their decisions. The members of society that are deviating from social norms are seen as the root of the problem. Most people believe these outcasts of society deviate because of bizarre circumstances, such as illness, accidents, character flaw etc.…

Many people stereotype homeless into drunks out for everyone’s money. If they knew what homeless people had gone through that shaped them into a vagabond, these misconceptions wouldn’t be made. Problem Statement As mentioned above, homelessness is a pressing problem that needs to be addressed in society. There are a multitude of macro factors that affect individuals and lead to homelessness. However, the needs, situations, and experiences of individual groups that make up the overarching homeless population are varied (Stalker, 2014). Homeless families are affected by many of the factors that impact other homeless groups, such as poverty, regulations and laws, and lack of affordable housing.…
