Respecting others around me is one thing that I can do to make a difference as a citizen in America. I think it is important to respect police officers, military, fire fighters, etc. Respect comes in lots of different forms. We can respect others by the way we treat them when they are helping us, but we can also respect them when we are living our day to day lives. Of course following the laws in America is a way to respect others. Many people in America lose their lives because people refuse to respect the laws that have been made to protect us. For example, many people die each year because of drunk drivers that have broken the law. Another way to respect others is to obey our authority. Romans 13: 1 says, “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities.” I think this means that you respect the people that God has placed over you. Even when you don’t like the people who are in the government, God says that we have to respect them. “May we never forget, freedom is never free” All of my life I have watched my Dad in airports shake hands with soldiers. We have been in lots of airports when the soldiers are coming home from their tour of duty overseas and my Dad would drag me out of my seat, walk up to them, shake their hand and tell them “thank you for serving our country”. When I was little, I didn’t really understand why he would do that, but as I got older, he explained to me that those soldiers sacrifice a lot so that we can be free. Now when my dad and I see a soldier in a airport, we do the exact same thing. The difference is my dad doesn’t have to drag me out of my seat anymore. I
