The report advocated for health science students to receive interdisciplinary education. The chairperson, Edmund Pellegrino, stated “an educational experience can be interdisciplinary at the level of students, at the level of faculty, or at both”(Baldwin, p.26, 2007). Pellegrino considered the following combinations as interdisciplinary: 1) Students from more than one health profession taught by faculty from one health profession 2) students in one health profession taught by faculty from more than one profession and 3) students from more than one health profession taught by faculty from more than one profession (Baldin, 2007). A study was conducted by a set of researchers to identify what the characteristics for an effective interprofessional teams are. The study proposes ten characteristics that support effective interdisciplinary teamwork. The first characteristic identified was positive leadership and management attributes. This means that the team identifies a leader who establishes a clear direction and management This leader should have a clear vision for the team while still listening and providing support and supervision to the team members. This also means having a full complement of staff and timely replacement or cover for empty or absent posts. The sixth characteristic for a successful team was supportive team climate which means the team creates a culture of trust, a nurturing consensus and values contributions (Nancarrow et al, 2013). For instance, the team needs to create an interprofessional atmosphere.
The seventh characteristic that supports interdisciplinary team work are individual characteristics. This could be the individual’s knowledge, experience, initiative, knowing strengths and weaknesses, listening skills, reflexive practice. A good team will have individuals that have the desire to work on the same goals. The eighth characteristic found was clarity of vision, which means having a clear set of values that drive the direction of the service and the care provided.
