Love and sacrifice can help people overcome many obstacles that occur throughout one’s lifetime. There are many different types of sacrifices one makes throughout life, the first one being personal sacrifice, the second one being group sacrifice and the last one as societal sacrifice. In the novel The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, the 1996 movie Romeo and Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann, and the article Does Love Involve Sacrifice or Compromise? by Aaron Ben-Zeév this is the reoccurring theme. In these three works the theme of love plays an important role. Whether it is romantic love or the characters love for their families and friends if one truly loves them they may sacrifice many things for them.

Love conquers any hatred Romeo or Juliet had with the other family. It is what makes them strong and conquers all and they are even willing to sacrifice everything for the other to be together. An example of this from the movie would be in Act Three, scene one, Tybalt and Mercutio are insulting each other and thrusting their swords as Romeo arrives on the scene. He has been merry with joy because of his marriage to Juliet. Tybalt wants to fight him, but Romeo declares only love for Tybalt. When Romeo is about to leave, Tybalt then stabs Mercutio from under Romeo's arm, and then runs off. After Mercutio’s death Romeo gets enraged and devastated and he than engages in a battle with Tybalt and he dies. In this scene love and sacrifice go hand in hand because if Romeo had not loved Mercutio as a friend he would not have come in the way which may have allowed Mercutio to die faster. And after that Romeo may not have gone to kill Tybalt if he did not love Mercutio as family. Another example of this would be in Act Three, scene two, Juliet anxiously waits for the time to pass so she and Romeo can celebrate their wedding. The Nurse arrives and makes Juliet aware of someone who has died. There is confusion at first because at one point Juliet believes that both her cousin Tybalt and Romeo have died.
