Cultures all around the world perceive women to be objects and nothing more. For a woman to speak up for herself and make a change in something she believes in, truly shows the heroic act of that individual in any circumstance. The book A Thousand Splendid Suns on the other hand, written by Khaled Hosseini, demonstrates this principle very strongly through the two protagonist’ in the novel, Mariam and Laila. The development of the two in earlier chapters bring them to be totally different characters near the end when the true act of heroism fully proves to be evident. Furthermore the struggles of Mariam in particular built her into a courageous and selfless character, throughout the novel, portraying her has the true heroine.…
Through years the role of a man was and still is to be the provider, fighter, and the “main man” politically, socially, and culturally. They are expected to hold their woman on the highest pedestal they can put her on, and is the strong and well endowed one in the relationship. While as the woman is and still is perceived as the one who practically moves up the social hierarchy by marriage, and is seen as peculiar if they “wear the pants” in the relationship. In Marie de France’s Lanval, she battles this stereotype through female empowerment by reversing traditional gender roles.…
Throughout the three Shakespearean plays ‘Macbeth, Hamlet, and Much Ado about Nothing’, the reader connects to each character in many ways. Macbeth, for example, is a ruthless character. Any reader can conclude that Rebecca is indeed a main character of the story despite her absence. A deeper evaluation reveals that the opinions or rather the technique used by the author were molded by the perceptions of the society at the time when the book was written. It is essential to note that most female gothic literature exposes the predicaments that women face in their day to day lives. This story sheds some light on how the perceptions of evil people can slow down the progress and growth of an individual and especially those who are perceived to be weak in the societal order, like the…
Although she might seem like a one-sided and uninfluential character in the relatively short portion of Macbeth that she appears in, Lady Macbeth is one of the most captivating and influential characters within the play. Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare in the early 17th Century, mainly consists of the plot by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to murder the King of Scotland in order to take power for themselves. Lady Macbeth plays a key role as the instigator of this plot and intervenes in key events several times in order to maintain the plot’s success. Lady Macbeth’s status as a woman combined with her significant ambition provides enormous complexity to her character and makes her extremely interesting. The substantial change in character…
Briony has a need for control and order and she uses writing as a way to achieve her needs by creating worlds in which she has the ability to manipulate her characters and their outcomes. Assassins (from Arabic: أساسيون Asasiyun) is the name used to refer to the medieval Nizari Ismailis. Often characterized as a secret order led by a mysterious "Old Man of the Mountain", the Nizari Ismailis were an Islamic sect that formed in the late 11th century from a split within Ismailism, itself a branch of Shia Islam. In time, the Nizaris began to pose a military threat to Sunni Seljuq authority within their territories by capturing and inhabiting many unconnected mountain fortresses throughout Persia (and later also Syria) under the leadership of Hassan-i Sabbah (who is typically regarded as the founder of the Assassins), therefore founding the so-called Nizari Ismaili state. While "Assassins" typically refers to the entire medieval Nizari sect, in fact only a class of acolytes known as the fida'i actually engaged in assassination work. Lacking their own army, the Nizari relied on these trained warriors to carry out espionage and assassinations of key enemy figures, and over the course of 300 years successfully killed two caliphs, and many viziers, sultans and Crusader leaders.[1] Under leadership of Imam Rukn-ud-Din Khurshah, the Nizari state declined internally, and was eventually destroyed as the Imam surrendered the castles to the invading Mongols.…
