Personal Essay: My Religious Beliefs

In my opinion, religious belief is a kind of unshakable conviction allows you to worship the divine with your soul and heart. In this way, religious belief guides and regulates their behavior in a secular society. My religious belief is Buddhism, which somehow was influenced by my mom who deeply believes in Buddhism. The first time I heard about Buddhism was when I was eight years old. My mom brought me to a temple where I was listening to the praying of a bunch of monks and discussion of causality. What I heard that day really made me start to believe in Buddhism. The solemn chanting and melodious belling in the temple made me really feel the peace from the prayer, and I thought that everyone should have peace in their lives. After people die, people who helped other people or contributed to the world will go to heaven. For example, Mother Teresa, who serves poor people in India. In the Buddhism story, Buddha cut his flesh to feed Eagle. I believe the selfless dedication is the reason which made him become God and Saint. In the opposite, the bad guys, such as Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, and some capitalists who treated other badly, there is no doubt that they are in the hell and suffering. Even until today, I believe that you must do good things to get good results, or you will get bad results. To characterize my relationship with Buddhism from the earliest time to now, I will use the phrase “strong to non - existent” I used to have regular attendance of the meeting in temple when I was young. However, since I came to America, I am busy studying; therefore, I don’t go to temple that often, but I still pray even though I don’t go to temple. I went to temple when I went back to China last summer with my mom, but to sum up, I don’t do as much as what I did when I was young. I felt that religion teaches its disciple how to act, and treat
