We have mentally ill in prisons because we rather spend money on increasing law enforcement, military, and corrections, but not have money to build facilities where they can be treated. Cost-shifting is one of the factors that criminalize mentally ill people. Even though every single prison has their own mental ill team, they don’t do a great job with treating mentally ill people. For example, in the video “The New Asylums” they showed this part where the group of mentally ill people was having therapy sections, but there were locked in this little cage. How can they help mentally ill people this way? Additionally, as a society, we label mentally ill people. They are labeled as dangerous and violent. This leads for people to feel fear towards them. Another example from the video “The Released” mentally ill people would be trespassing someone’s house and the first thing these people would do is call the police. In the section “psychiatry is a branch of the law and a secular religion rather than a science or therapy” Szasz is saying that psychiatrists are the ones who created mental illness. The psychiatrists confine and control the “deviant” so-called mentally ill people (p.38). Basically, in the two videos we see that mentally ill people are controlled by the state. There is no place for mentally ill people in society because they are different and out of the norms so they can’t be with the society, the only option is to lock them up. Mentally ill people are not locked up in mental health facilities because we don’t have enough in our society, that is why they are being imprisoned. Mental illness is a way for the state to keep authority. Moreover, psychiatry has colluded with the legal system to create the “therapeutic state” (p. 39). Therapeutic states are a system in which disapproved actions, thoughts, and emotions are repressed ("cured") through pseudomedical interventions. In these two videos, we can see how this is played out. The mentally ill people in prisons are always under control and have to take their medicines. If they don’t take their medicines or do what they are told to do it was always a problem because the swat team had to come by the prisons to make them. Whenever they are out of prison into the society, they always
