Stura Structuration: My Parents Grow Up In A Strict Family

Improved Essays
When it comes to structure, both my parents grew up in a strict family and from what I’ve heard based on their perceptions, life was hard even though it may have seemed perfect from another’s eyes. Structuration is “the process by which systems are produced and reproduced through members’ use of rules and resources”
(West, 2014, pg. 273). In my parents’ case, the rules their parents set out for them influenced how they lived back then and ultimately, how they live today. All in all, it influenced their way of life altogether. After they got married, they wanted something different for their children. They didn’t want to force a strict set of rules like their parents did for them because of their religious beliefs. They wanted their children to experience life and all that it comes with. From that influence, my parents have been the best my brother and I could ever ask for.

Through the course of my brother and I’s life, my parents have always supported us on everything we took on whether it be sports, a school activity or even a hobby. We never had any rules growing up either. My parents told us to be responsible for our own actions and this, in my opinion, is the best way to teach your kids. I never was the rebellious child growing up and I still couldn’t tell you why I was that way today. I guess it’s just my spirit and overall outlook on life. My brother, on the other hand, he had trouble throughout middle school and high school. We had just moved to Utah during that time and it was hard for us, but especially him. He got involved in things my parents knew he probably would do, but they didn’t stop him. They let him run his course and let him learn from his

In Robert Coles’ article, I Listen to My Parents and I Wonder What They Believe, he argues children perceive ethical issues and need guidance to develop their moral principles. Coles interviews numerous children and asks them questions regarding their moral beliefs. He uses the children’s moral questions and answers as evidence for his argument. Coles urges parents to engage with their children’s moral education to help their children avoid finding ‘wrong’ answers, and to help them establish a moral framework to discern the ‘right’ answers. Parents who ignore their children’s moral questions deny their children an opportunity to develop a moral standard which enables them to evaluate ethics.…

Every child craves the taste of defiance towards their parents. Adolescents come to an age where their parents advice doesn't seem to influence them as much as it used to. When I was younger, I was always extremely well behaved. My parents friends would always remark about how I was so polite. When children are so used to doing the right thing, being disobedient is exhilarating, even if it's for the simplest of offenses.…

In the excerpt from Don’t Believe Everything You Think, Thomas Kida discusses the human belief system and the factors that influence them the most. He exemplifies how our beliefs may correlate to us making poor decisions when it comes to spending money and falling for quackery. Laslty, Kida highlights some major aspects of memory that many are unaware of- the fact that our recollection of past events are not always as accurate as we may believe, and that they are capable of fluctuating based on our feelings, mood, or environment. One of the points Thomas Kida made in this excerpt is the obvious yet so often overlooked fact that we are greatly influenced by the people we surround ourselves with and those we love.…

The Parenting Techniques And Its Effect On Today's Kids By Laura Fobler Sep 19, 2012 Growing up I lived with a family where it was myself and 2 younger brothers being raised by an absent father and a devoted mother. While our father had little influence in our life away from financial support, my mother dedicated her entire life towards taking care of her kids and making sure we had a healthy youth. She did not have the advantage of advanced parenting methods because we grew up in a time where parents were simply expected to raise their kids on blind luck rather than through the expertise of psychology. My youngest brother and I could easily be described as healthy and happy children, often appreciating exactly what was given to us and enjoying life most often. Granted there were times of revolution or defiance but these phases were short and few between.…

    Summary: Role Of Religion

My parents raised me with a Baptist Christian faith. The role of religion (Activity 1.3 – Role of Religion), was evident in my upbringing – we went to church every Sunday until I turned 18, spanking was an acceptable form of discipline, evolution didn’t exist, we said prayer before eating any meal, etc.) As I got older, forms of punishment like spanking moved on to time alone from distractions in my room, where I had to reflect on my actions – similar to therapy in Japan (Nathan, 1990). My parents’ began teaching me their values at a very early age – some of which I still live by, while others I fully disagree with. For example, within the church, the ability to reach out to, empathize with, and emotionally support others was strongly encouraged.…

Ordinarily my parents set reasonable demands. And at times, I considered my parents to be fair and flexible, especially when extenuating circumstances led to rules being broken. But for the most part, when it came to rule violations, they were strict disciplinarians. Either you toed the line, or you faced the consequences of your choices. The consequences usually resulted in some form of corporal punishment, such as a spanking, a belt, or a switch across the bottom.…

As a child, having rules to follow wasn’t unheard of with my family. There was always a way to behavior with friends/family, at school, at home and out in the street. When expectations set high, not meaning them meant my siblings and I typical had a week long cleaning punishments along with handing over all toys, games, and light up sneakers; about three times a week this happened to me.…
