In the book Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, Elijah and Xavier's relationship changed drastically. When xavier and elijah went to war that affected their friendship a lot because they started out as best friends when they got enlisted into war but before they even reached england their differences started to show. Elijah was capable to talk himself out of situations and Xavier liked to be by himself. They both had to undergo many things together such as surviving, killing and staying together. Throughout the book they started to distance from each other and started to become enemies. Many things that happened throughout the book factored into how their friendship changed.

Xavier started to get jealous of elijah because of how good he got at killing and all the people that he was killing. Although, Xavier killed a talented german sniper and got a higher status and a mauser rifle. The jealousy and the amount of deaths cause elijah emotional distress and lead him to kill elijah. Xavier felt that if he didn’t kill elijah, that elijah would kill him.
Elijah and Xavier's relationship also was affected by jealousy. Xavier was jealous of Elijah because everyone liked Elijah more than Xavier because Xavier was the more talkative and outgoing friend and Xavier knew that he was the better soldier than his friend. Xavier also got very jealous when the soldiers and officers congratulated elijah with medals and awards because they weren’t acknowledging Xavier and his achievements.
Elijah and Xavier’s relationship was impacted aswell by elijah’s addiction to morphine. Elijah became depression throughout war, “All winter I have suffered inexplicable suffering with a miserable thing called depression” (Boyden 233).

I believe that the moral of this novel is that friendships can’t always overcome tough situations and that sometimes things end badly because of certain situations. For this book that certain situation would be

Often during the battles Xavier uses herbs from road sides and prays for certain fallen ones! This plays extreme significance in the story’s theme of confliction between personal beliefs and the reality that faces you. It is clear that Xavier’s soul is shook deep down from the atmosphere around him so as an outlet to practice and stay touch with his belief he finds a sort comfort in praying for the fallen army men. But the contrast of the situation lies in the fact that it does not really even matter if he is praying for the few fallen men (almost to cleanse and find peace in his own soul) because there all literally thousands of people dying all around him, and he himself is a part of those killings as he is a part of the army. Xavier is indeed conflicted between his own beliefs and the reality of the bloodshed…
