The Relationship Between Aggression And Ang Lee

Improved Essays
Aggression has always been a trait to prove manliness and Ang Lee manages to break the typical stereotype notion of a homosexual man being feminine. When Ennis Del Mar is enraged towards Alma for confronting his love affair with Jack, he deals his anger by getting into a fight with a stranger who almost runs him over on his way to the bar. Ennis has the extreme urge to prove his manhood by getting into these fights. The reason why Ang Lee emphasizes Ennis Del Mar’s aggressive side is to show viewers, as much as Ennis’ desires to prove himself, that manliness is indisputable and is not in conflict with his sexuality. Ennis del Mar once said in the short story “Brokeback Mountain” that “if you can’t fix it you’ve got to stand it” (85). Though the narrator judges the incomplete relationship between Ennis and Jack and Ennis’s inability to accept his homosexuality, this powerful statement functions as a message throughout the statement and applies to another character in the same short story: Alma Beers. Alma, who is Ennis’s beloved spouse, play a different role in both Anne Proulx’s short story, “Brokeback Mountain,” and Ang Lee’s Oscar nominated film, Brokeback Mountain. Lee gives an interpretation of Alma in which he characterizes this female character with a more forceful nature that embodies Ennis’s statement, whereas Proulx offers her readers a more subtle…

While viewing the film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I fell in love with Lisbeth Salander, whole played the role of a female heroic figure and displays characteristics of female empowerment, brilliance, and dominating. Typically, women do not play heroic figures in Hollywood films, especially one that consists of sexual violence. I felt like I was walking in Lisbeth’s shoes during the film, but I was unaware of what is yet to come. For example, during the scene where Lisbeth met her guardian, Bjurman, for the first time, I was not surprised by his controlling behavior. I was also not shocked when he raped Lisbeth and started battering her in a sexually sadistic way.…

This chapter showed us how relational aggression has two types. One being direct which usually involves physical aggression and the other indirect which can be gossiping, shunning, and can be proactive or reactive. This chapter reminded me of the time I witnessed a form of relational aggression that was mentioned in the book such as filling a vehicles gas tank with sugar. My friend decided it was time to break up with his now ex-girlfriend, soon after he began dating again his former girlfriend stated to him that he would regret it, months later his ex, gained access to his parking lot and poured sugar in the gas tank of his car, destroying the engine. I often ask myself if this act of indirect relational aggression caused him to change his…

For my creative project, I have decided to explore the very common issue of gender micro aggressions and gender harassment. Micro aggressions are described as, “Everyday slights, indignities, putdowns, and insults at people of color, women, the LGBTQ populations, or those who are marginalized; experience in their day to day interactions with other people” (Derald Wing Sue Ph.D). When people think of aggression, they think of some being physically aggressive. A micro aggression in different in the sense that words are the aggressors instead of people being aggressive. Micro aggressions are usually not seen as offensive.…

While the film may have lacked development of the men’s relationship with one another and how it grew to become what it was, it allowed for a different development of Ennis and Jack as individual characters. In the film, Lee expands on Ennis’s life with Alma and Jack’s life with Lureen. The story by Proulx is told primarily focusing on Ennis’ life; Lureen, Jack’s wife, is barely mentioned. In the film we get the entire backstory to them meeting and their relationship. Lureen comes from a family of money that isn’t particularly fond of Jack, Lee shows this to portray their marriage as one that is mutually beneficially but leaves both of them unsatisfied.…

Taylor (2014) discussed how aggression in African Americans could be due to their chronic exposure to violence. Whether it be through domestic violence, police brutality related to racism, or community violence and chronic exposure to traumatic events, each of these types of events can lead to psychological issues. These individuals may carry around residual animosity because of the pain and anger they feel related to witnessing violent crimes against people like themselves. Also, the aggression seen in African Americans could be their way of reacting to the many traumatic events they may experience on a daily basis. Complex PTSD is associated with trauma that occurs often and increases in intensity over time.…

As stated in the previous essay, Ennis del Mar from “Brokeback Mountain” is a character who, despite being in love, refuses to let his desires overcome him. Instead, he lives a life that is expected of him, playing into the cowboy stereotype and fulfilling the role of husband and father, instead of being with Jack, his true love. Jack, himself is also constrained by society to hide his sexuality and lives as a married man for most of his life. However, although Jack yearns to live the rest of his life “out of the closet,” he, never gets the chance because society will not allow it; he is eventually murdered for being gay. Also, throughout the story, Ennis never tries to explain himself and never apologizes for the life he has chosen, even though he knows it will never be a happy one.…
