Conflict Background

The Syrian Civil War is a multi-sided armed conflict in Syria. The war started in 2011 after President Bashar al-Assad’s government violently restrained protestors requesting his removal. Many countries including the US have tried to intervene. Since then the Syrian government has refused efforts to negotiate with these “terrorist groups.” There were 90,000 casualties by June 2013 and 250,000 as of April 2015. This war isn’t just a battle between those for and against the Syrian president, it has escalated and drawn in regional and world powers. There been several attacks worldwide from people of Syrian descent to the civil war. Thousands of innocent civilians have died due to barrel bombs dropped by government aircraft.

Not everyone is fighting for the same reason. One group is fighting for The Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS). ISIS have not only executed war crimes and targeted Syria, but several countries including the United States in acts of terrorism. Many countries such as the US, Europe, and Russia have expressed and thought-out plans to help the efforts against ISIS. The Islamic State of Iraq and Levant are connected to thousands of killings worldwide (intrastate conflict) and their supporters are expanding country to country in hopes of the spread of the Islamic State.

2. Religion is the motivation for both sides of the conflict. Groups are in support of Sunni Muslim or of al-Assad 's Alawite sect. Many civil wars that rooted in religion have shown longer and bloodier. In addition, civil wars are most likely repeat and even twice as deadly to innocent civilians the second time.

3. Opposition towards one another turned violent at the start and has increased. A variety of foreign governments are helping both sides acquire vast amounts of weaponry and funding. Human rights groups have expressed their thoughts and issues about plenty human rights violations that conducted by President Assad and the Rebel Groups. It consisted of 278 unarmed military observers, 81 international civilian staff, and 40 local civilian staff. Military personnel came from small countries including China, Philippines, Russia, France being some of the many. On July 20, the UN removed half of its soldiers and extended the mission for 30 more days. Russia called for the stop of violence during a UN meeting. On August 20, the mission ended because there was no significant reduction of violence. In 2013, after President Assad 's government carried out the killing of dozens of Syrians due to chemical weapons. The UN Security Council and human rights groups sought out to require Syria to assume all responsibility and to destroy all of its chemical weapons and its chemical weapon production. Following the agreement between US and Russia, Syria acceded to the Chemical Weapons Convection. Under the Resolution 2128, the UN Security Council is responsible for making certain Syria fulfills its commitments. On the 18th of August, most of the known toxic chemicals were destroyed. This conflict management effort was more successful than the last one but there are rumors that the Syrian government didn 't fully comply, of the destruction of all chemical weapons, but no evidence of any weapons has surfaced.
