I will be questioning why Caroline broke into Megan Race’s home and took her journal. Caroline breaks into a witness’ home and needs to look for evidence that she is an unreliable witness and a liar. Caroline thinks that Megan killed James out of revenge and is framing Brett. Caroline had suspected something was up with Megan and couldn’t pinpoint what. She hired a private …show more content…
The police first suspected Brett because she had James’s wallet and a bloody knife when they found her. Brett said she didn’t kill him, she was swimming at the time of the murder. Caroline then suspected Megan Race, an ex-girlfriend but learned that was not the case, but she had an affair with her brother-in-law. She had gone to the killing site, which was owned by her family and bequathed. She and her father, Channing, walked through the process. Caroline’s father was an ex-cop. She retains some information when she looks back on her past. She remembered an ex-boyfriend, David, that she helped escape the law that her father had called him in because he was a fugitive and Channing didn’t think he was a good influence for his daughter, ”You decided to save her, just as you saved me” Caroline bitterly said(Patterson 412). Caroline connected the pieces on how he didn’t think James was a good influence for his granddaughter and how he made David disappear. He didn’t want the same thing that happened to Caroline to happen to Brett. Caroline went to confront Channing and he admitted to everything, in scrupulous detail. James was murdered while Brett was swimming, and Brett finds him. She pulls the knife out of his chest and somehow ends up with his wallet. She gets scared and runs from the scene of the crime. A police officer finds her and does not read her her Miranda rights. She is arrested on a DUI and brought to the jail. She is brought to the hospital and evidence is taken from her body. She is then questioned in a holding cell and her Miranda rights are read to her then. Caroline is called in then and plans to have all the evidence thrown out from Brett’s questioning before her Miranda rights are read to her but Brett wants her story heard because she had nothing to do with killing James. Caroline finds a lead that leads her to Megan Race but that turned out to be a dead end. She is fighting hard in court but everyone thinks Brett killed James. Caroline remembered her past and how her father, Channing, thought some boy wasn’t good enough for her and called him in, as he was a fugitive. Caroline connects this to Brett because Channing thinks James is a druggie and no good for his granddaughter. Channing only has months left to live and was doing this to save Brett’s life,” What little of life that was left to me, I might be save the rest of hers”(Patterson 413). Channing confesses and walks Caroline through the night that changed Brett’s life forever and no sooner does he finish and he asks Caroline to
