Reflection Of A Pedagogical Approach To Teaching

Summary: My approach to teaching focuses on how to best engage students while helping them master the fundamentals of business and technical writing. I guide them in learning how to transfer their understanding of concepts to real-world applications because that is where the true mastery of knowledge takes place. Whether in an on-campus class, a hybrid, or an online-only class, I believe in involving students as partners in their learning process.

Pedagogical Approach: I realize that the online learning experience is quite different from face-to-face classes and that it can be very isolating. To cope with this problem, I reach out to my students by involving them in group activities and by communicating with them on a daily basis. For example, I have done extensive research on medical metaphors and find that they are a significant part of doctor/patient and doctor/doctor communication. Although I concentrated on metaphors in the television series House, M.D. in my dissertation, there is a connection between metaphor usage in this fictional story and in the real world of medicine. I posit that by helping nursing students understand how effectively metaphors can be used in the medical field, they gain better communication skills which would make them better candidates for jobs in medicine.

Additionally, I have an ongoing blog that offers advice for students trying to navigate the waters of college. My blog has been up since August 2016; I post a minimum of twice a week, so that students who are struggling can learn how to handle such topics as how to communicate with one's instructor, how to get started when writer's block threatens, and how to deal with teamwork in
