“Spend your money wisely!” is a lesson often preached in life, but it is easier said than done. I am at the point in my life where every cent matters as I am enrolling in postsecondary. Tuition costs are unbelievable and student debt will have me working for years to pay them off. It is times like these when I look back at when I was careless and lived lavishly. I would often think to myself, “Was that purchase really necessary? I could have saved money instead of wasting it on something counterproductive.” I ate out too much and purchased too many unnecessary items. The total cost of my regretful purchases could have saved me countless of dollars. However, there is one particular incident where I wasted my money in a completely illogical way. …show more content…
Did I know the meaning of the words? No. Did I know how to use it in a sentence? No. Did I know how to have a conversation in Mandarin? No, I was not learning anything. The main reason my mother wanted me to learn Mandarin, was so we can communicate better. The classes were not interactive at all. As previously stated, all we would do is listen to our teacher, do some writing, and then leave. Another reason I despised Chinese school, was because I found learning the language extremely difficult. There is a specific order of strokes you need to follow for each character. Also there is no way to determine how a character is pronounced, you have to memorize it. Each class were two hours long, but they felt like they lasted all of eternity. The atmosphere of the other students were depressing as well. We all hated the class and were not learning anything. As the years went on, I began to receive more stress and work from regular school. I stopped caring about Chinese school and wanting to satisfy my mom. She knew I was not learning properly in the course since my Chinese never improved, yet she kept insisting I keep attending …show more content…
There is no point in learning something you’re not passionate about and that you are weak in. Chinese school was a big waste of money and time, and it was not cheap. Each year is divided into three terms and each term costs $200, overall my family paid $2400. Having the knowledge to not pursue education you're uninterested in is very important in post secondary. My mother wanted me to become a pharmacist, but I have no interest in medicine. I would be very bored studying to be a pharmacist and it would be a repeat of Chinese school. I don't want to waste precious time and money on education again, so I told that I don’t want to and she is fine with it. I felt really guilty for wasting so much money, so I taught myself budgeting. I set up a budget for myself every month and record my spendings on a spreadsheet. This saved me a lot of money and I'm proud to be able to budget myself. When I get a paycheck from work, I put half of it into an untouched savings account. I discovered that is another exceptional way to cut my spendings. Overall, that experience was a blessing in
