As an ESL student, and an introverted person, speaking in public is always a huge challenge for me. In fact, if Speech Communication is not a required course for every student, I think I would never enroll in this course. Nevertheless, during the process of taking this course, I realized that I have learned a lot, and this course is not so burdensome than I thought before, on the contrary, it is quite interesting to listen to other classmates’ speeches, and giving my own speeches in front of a group of people can effectively increase my confidence.
This semester we had four speeches at all, two informative speeches-- the speech designed to convey knowledge and understanding; one persuasive speech-- the speech of creating, reinforcing, or changing people’s beliefs or actions; and a problem-solving small group presentation-- a small group formed to solve a particular problem. For each of the speeches, the most important thing for me was to deal with the stage fright-- anxiety over the

There was an episode when I prepared my persuasive speech: my initial topic was about adopting animals, then I found my topic was same with the other classmate, and our central idea was quite alike. To avoid repeating same things, I decided to change my topic to ADHD drugs, it was also a good topic because it was related to us college students. It was worth to prepare a new speech, because when I did research on this topic, I realized how ADHD drugs harmed addicted students and the severity of the problem. My persuasive speech was organized in a problem-cause-solution order, and I used sources from some authoritative medical websites, and one real-life case to support my ideas. I was nervous when I gave my new speech, so my delivery was a bit rushed, and as a result, my articulation became worse, I must say that articulation was the most serious challenge I

For example, I was able to make use of proper chronemics. Compared to the other speeches, I spoke much slower and clearer. With proper chronemics and effective use of paralanguage, such as vocal pauses, I was finally able to truly own the room and the attention of the audience. I also significantly improved in the field of proxemics. I was comfortable with leaving the podium and the PowerPoint controls which resulted in me using more of the available space and minimizing the time I spent behind the visual barrier that the podium builds between the audience and I.…

As I approached the podium, it seemed there were thousands of people in the room, my knees were knocking and my heart was pounding, but when I spoke, all of that began to fade away. Despite it not being perfect, I was left with ease and relief. I can recall having a discussion with my parents regarding the anxiety I had they informed me they were quite normal and the only way to improve was to ensure I had a significant amount of experience meaning I had to do it more frequently and that I had full command of the topic. Otherwise I needed practice and to be prepared in order to be a great public…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

Throughout the course, I learned different aspects of project management, and skills that can be used in the everyday life as long as involve interacting with other people. In this class I learned about how to be a better team member. This semester I was reminded of how important communication is and how people need to keep emphasizing it as one of the most important skills any person could possesses. The personality test was useful, I think it gave all of us a good way to start to see how everyone is different. It made it easier for each of us to better understand one another in how our unique personalities can be a challenge when working with others.…

I sometimes get nervous about what people are thinking about my speech when I am giving it but if I don’t judge people from the audience then I will have the mindset when I am on stage that people from the audience are not judging me. Lastly, I think that I will be able to get up in front of people and give a speech without getting extremely nervous. I haven’t had much experience with speaking in front of big groups but hopefully by the end of this semester I will be very good at it without having any nervous feelings if someone asked me to give a public…
