Content Area Learning Reflection

Reading Instruction has stimulated many discussions among educators in the past few years. There has been an increase in the use of reading in multiple content areas in the past few years. Educators around the country have changed and interweaved the new and the old ways of teaching and understanding the reading process. Many aspects have changed this instruction such as the understanding of content area literacy, choosing the appropriate texts, knowledge transformation, and learner development. 527). I believe the combination of content area literacy, appropriate texts, knowledge transformation, and learner development will accomplish that goal. The understanding of this will help my own teaching practice tremendously. By understanding all of those things, I will be a better-prepared teacher, and as prepared teacher, I will be confident in the teaching of literacy. With this confidence, I will be able to pick appropriate text that coincides with the grade level and the lessons I will be teaching. Along with that, I will be able to help my student’s development abundant knowledge that they will transfer to many areas of school and life. According to Cervetti and Hiebert (2015), when students read a variety of texts, such as reading and science, it builds a foundation of knowledge in those areas, and this will make them better readers in all content areas. This statement is important for the grade level and the age I wish to teach. This is because I want to teach fourth grade, and I believe with a wide variety of texts the students will development a lot of knowledge, which relates to the phrase from the text. In fourth grade, students are transferring into the formal operational stage of Piaget’s Developmental Theory, so they are beginning to think logically about abstract propositions. I had no idea what content area literacy was before this class and now I have a grasp of the knowledge. That is where my knowledge transformation comes in, because I transferred my knowledge to complete this first written reflection. I am developing as a learner already and plan to gain even more knowledge throughout the semester. I will use this knowledge along with the future knowledge that I gain in my future classroom with my students. Literacy is very important in a child’s life. Best said by Wendt (2013) “ Literacy is crucial even for younger adolescents, who seemingly have time to grow and improve” (p. 39).
