My Reflection On ELL Students

Improved Essays
For this week in my classroom, the day began the same as usual. The students enter the classroom, and I was greeted with hugs and hellos from my students. At the start of the day, students come in and our given a significant amount of time to eat breakfast, write in their planners, work on any makeup work, and take AR tests. I took this time to do my spelling assessments with my small group of students. Because they were all coming in at different times and doing different things, I decided to do the assessment individually for each student. I will go into greater detail later in the reflection. After giving my assessments, I took my ELL student out into the hallway and we completed our hour-long session. We were worked on phonological awareness …show more content…
Something that simple was a game changer for my lesson.
After we finished, it was time to go straight into Literacy Centers. Every week, my first group is the medium group. It is important that while these students are group in the medium group based off of their current levels, it has come to my attention that this group is significantly diverse and have a very wide range of abilities. I was surprised by today, because it was like a lightbulb flipped on for my students. I gave the example as a review, and

After, I felt confident in their abilities to successfully complete the assignment. They were able to successfully break into groups of two and successfully match the images provided with the correct superlatives and comparatives. They were genuinely involved and engaged in the activity. Once they completed all of the parts of the activity, I asked them to give me some of their answers and we quickly reflected on why answers were correct. Then, I explained to them that they would be doing something very similar to the activity, but they would be making their own picture for the different comparatives and superlatives. They were excited that they were going to get a chance to show what they have learned through drawing and being creative. All of their drawings were very unique, thoughtful, and creative. I was shocked because sometimes they were able to come up with things that I would've never originally thought. For example, for cold, colder, and coldest, one of the students drew a water for cold, a refrigerator for colder, and a popsicle for coldest. I couldn't believe how accurate and out of the box their response was. Even the students in my lower group were making creative

On September 17, I observed first grade, Elkhorn City Elementary teacher, Dana Sheets. These rambunctious students had just came back from lunch and were still phasing to settling down for their lesson. The teacher did a wonderful job of catching their attention through the transition of calming them. She had the students complete a word puzzle on the wall out of their spelling words. She had made the boards setup on the wall so that each student can just run up and connect a puzzle piece, in which case is one letter to help spell the word out, the next student would follow behind, completing another word and eventually they would have the word spelled out.…

With the end of the second week, my student teaching experience at Wolford Elementary has been fulfilling since I have already performed the majority of my mentor’s duties. The week commenced with modeling by my mentor, preparing me for my unaccompanied instruction of Reading and Writing. After my instruction, my mentor and I debriefed discovering comparable items which required attention, such as, presenting frequent reinforcements and reminding the students of their reinforcement. With the constructive criticism from my mentor, it prepared me for my observation unfortunately, on the day of my observation my primary student referenced in my lesson plan was absent. The first instruction of the day is a group of three students for reading…

“Assuming” is a vague word of describing an English Language Learner (ELL) student in a classroom. Assuming can differ from one student to another, depending on the students’ knowledge of receiving an education in a classroom. The assumptions of how the host country’s classroom is portrayed also differs from one country to another. Thus, having a basic knowledge from an ELL student’s perspective from different sources that portrays a classroom from that host country can be abnormal for that ELL student. As quoted from the book Not for ESOL Teachers, “making assumptions of cultural meanings based on your own perception of cultural reality can result in incorrect interpretations of another’s intentions.”…

During my observation of an ESL push-in classroom, I have come across with many pedagogical issues and concerns that were brought in the Methods of Teaching class. Such topics include the use of cooperative Learning, classroom setting, adapting lesson plan and differentiated instructions by incorporating visuals, hands-on activities, simulations of real life situations etc so that students can nurture their skills academically, linguistically, socially as well as emotionally. The purpose of this report is to focus solely on the two major components of teaching-learning environment, and the components are relatively described as the classroom environment and the participation of students in relation with what I have learned in this class. When I entered the classroom, the first thing fascinated me was that all the four word walls were well labeled in both the languages(English and Spanish) with appropriate pictures. The setting of the room was safely configured, and convenient as well as appealing to the kids.…

According to Dr. Stefani Boutelier former educator states, “A hidden curriculum can be defined as the lessons that are taught informally, and usually unintentionally, in a school system includes; behaviors, perspectives, and attitudes that students pick up while they 're at school. Students learn to form opinions and ideas about their environment and their classmates” (2003). My observation at Many Farms Community School with the 3rd grade class has been fun and a lot of work but there have been things that have been negative and positive. The negative aspects were the memorization, asking permission, copying spelling words, and positive would be very courteous. First, one negative form of hidden curriculum where the students were memorizing the…
