School Counselor Reflection Paper

By the end of my high school years, I had my first serious intimate relationship with a guy, which lasted through the beginning of Young Adulthood. We were inseparable for an entire year, until he went off to college and the relationship started to fall apart. Though he was never physically violent with me, I would identify the relationship as damaging. Our pattern followed the cycle of Intimate Partner Violence. He would break up with me, cheat, or tear me down emotionally. Then he would feel so sorry for the way he had acted and we would go through a honeymoon phase. I would start to see him all of the time again and he would treat me the way he did when we first met. Then slowly I could feel the shift happening and before I had time to prepare my whole world was shattered once again. As I was applying terms to my life I realized how many I may not have experienced or it was not significant enough to stand out in he reflection of my development. When I become a School Counselor, I will keep this with me when working with students. Each student that will come into my office will have their own life experiences and will be facing their own struggles in development. It will be my job to help the students understand their conflicting thoughts and feelings and explore ways to help them achieve their goals. I was fortunate through my life to have parents that helped to guide me in the direction I felt best fit my life. Every child does not have this same experience, therefore as the School Counselor I will help to be a support system for those that are in need. I have learned so much and I look forward to being able to apply the information in a counseling
