Personal Effectiveness Game Plan Throughout the semester we have covered a wide variety of topics concerning gender and generational areas of study. While there are specific areas of these topics where I am strong, there are also areas where I could use some improvement. Throughout this paper I will analyze my strengths and weaknesses as relates to the materials we have learned in this course about gender and generational information. This paper will serve as a roadmap for my future actions for improvement. To start off, I have several areas where I am strong when it comes to gender and generational topics we covered in class. One area that I am strong in is working alongside and communicating with the Baby Boomer generation both inside the workplace as well as in everyday life. The Boomer generation is my grandparent’s generation and in a way I believe that that is a major reason why I am able to communicate and work effectively with them; they remind me of my grandparents. My grandparents were constantly in my life growing up and they helped to raise me in a sense and taught me …show more content…
My parents belong to Generation X and in a way I believe this affects my relationship with Generation X coworkers. To explain, in a way I think Generation X’ers see my generation as “children” and their own kids are usually around our age. Therefore, they feel they have the right to boss us around, and tell us what to do. I believe my generation almost sees the Generation X’ers as parents because that is what they are trying to do a lot of the time, parent us at work. For this reason, I have always had a hard time with Generation X’ers in the workplace. They either ignore me, or try to boss me around and tell me what to do like a parent. In turn, I do not know how to treat them or react to the way they treat me so I end up either ignoring them, or listening to what they boss me around to do, and do

Living in a world of increasing technological advances and a growing availability of information, our world has become a mess of controversy being presented from countless sides. Today's social issues don't just pertain to one particular region like they used to. Because of our newfound ability to communicate with massive amounts of people at one time, our issues have become the issues of the world. My generation, the millennials, may not be the largest generation in numbers, but we are the largest in untapped potential. It's a common misconception that our generation is least likely to vote, and it may have been true in the last presidential election.…

Generations each possess individual values, attitudes, and goals that strike them apart from one another, thus creating a gap. This gap is like a barrier that keeps the different generations distinct. As for the different attitudes of life, the people belonging to the old generation always wonder what has gone wrong with the new generation. They feel that during their time, young boys and girls were better behaved, more obedient and had greater respect for elders. Young people, on the other hand, feel that they are capable enough to learn on their own rather than lean heavily on the older generation for guidance.…

We are experiencing an interesting period in time. We actually have about 4 different generations currently in our work force. Each of these groups were raised in different households with different standards and different ethics. While each group (your veterans, baby boomers, generation x’s and millennials) have a lot of the same attributes in the workplace, you have many different characteristics that define each generation as their own. While there are lists and lists of differences, I believe that you can dumb them down to a few categories.…

They perceive younger generation as more outgoing and willing to converse with strangers if they have to. This lady helped me relate to our persuasion topic, where we learned that persuasion can only occur depending the speaker, the message, the medium, and the audience. I failed to persuade the lady as she already had a prejudice against people of my age. After this attempt, I learned to carefully choose who to interview. I changed my approach by going to places where people were at their comfort.…

Growing up in modern times brings both new benefits and challenges one will have to face in their lifetime. These changes can involve cultural shifts in families and how they function in society. According to Kathleen Gerson, the present generation is undergoing a “gender revolution” (3) where “shifts in women’s place and new forms of adult partnerships have created more options, but they also pose unprecedented conflicts and challenges” (3). Interestingly, Gerson also points out this revolution is unfinished because young adults are currently involved in an ongoing conflict where “changing lives are colliding with resistant institutions” (12). Therefore, one can see the current generation is facing a gender revolution being fought with ideas…

Before taking my social policy course, I did not think that ageism affected me, nor did I think of how ageism would affect me as an older adult. Now knowing that I once did not know how ageism affected me makes me realize that I am privileged. Moving on, I learned that children face challenges in regards to their age. Children are not listened to or respected by parents, but are ironically taught to respect people who are older than them. Before taking social policy, there were many times were I did not believe or value the opinion of children, because of their age.…

Generation Z and Millennials both share similarities and differences in how each generation tends to speak. Millennials focus more on expressing their opinions and opening the floor to debate whereas Generation Z is more emotional- being told that his opinion is wrong is considered an infringement on his happiness. The Generation Zers tend to be extremely captious when it comes to choosing their words and manipulating them to their advantage so that they cannot be told otherwise; they care only about their opinion and do not care to listen to others. These nuances in speech affect interactions among individuals in both generations. Both generations tend to be nitpicky and judgemental to others’ speech patterns and each has its own way of perceiving the same line.…
