My first thought was that a student coming for counseling on a beautiful afternoon and presenting with sleep disturbance would be dealing with the typical issues of a new student adjusting to college” Other behaviors that many change as a result of Steve are that at first, the counselor may have doubted Steve and thought perhaps that college was not for him, but after seeing and hearing what he had overcome and getting to be a part of Steve’s success the counselor may not assume anything until looking at the big picture. One more thing that I can think of behavior wise that might change in the counselor is that he will have faith in what he does, as well as the students that he serves, and work with them to make their dreams come true of completing a college education. I personally feel that most people you come in contact with do you change you in some way. This standard talks about a variety of things one of them being confidently and being able to recognize and build on client and community strengths. After reading this story I would review this one as I feel that this counselor talked to others about Steve that he was not given permission to do such as the hospital. I feel that the counselor’s values were imposed on Steve at times at least in the beginning. This could be resolved by a few simple things, ensuring that you have consent to talk to others about the client. And ensure that the client understands what they are signing and giving consent for. Another thing that needs to be done is that from the beginning of the case not imposing your own thoughts upon someone such as assuming that they someone wants help or needs help based on your assumptions of the person. I feel that the National Organization of Human Service ethical standards are very important to use as they give you guidance into what is the correct and ethical way of addressing things in the human service field. They also give you guidelines of what is expected from someone who works in human services and holds you accountable to your own behaviors that you display when working with clients. And also gives the client something to hold you accountable to and to know that you are upholding the strictest ethics of social work, even if they are not
