This paper discusses the reflection and critical analysis of a service learning experience at Regent Care. Service learning is so much more than community service. Service learning is an experience in “which students learn the importance of giving back to the community while applying learned course material into the experience” (Sheafer, 2014). It also “provides students with opportunities to reflect broader system-level thinking” (Sabo et al., 2015). Through this experience students were able to give back to members of our community, and also reflect on concepts learned throughout the class. For example students were able to experience first-hand a community member who has suffered from strokes or memory loss. This experience enabled students to reflect on their communication style. As a future employer in the field of speech pathology it is essential that we students have a firm representation on our communication style.

As a downfall many of these students are only being taught through textbooks. As a soon to be college graduate I have experienced that one of the most effective ways for me to learn is through being able to actually physically apply what I have learned. It is one thing to read something in textbooks and it is another to be able to experience it. One model said to effectively “produce a more active learning and a more diverse set of skills” is known as service learning (Davidson et al.,2010). Through service learning it is suggested that it will “facilitate more productive, responsible and culturally sensitive citizens” (Davidson et al.,2010). Through this experience I have been able to learn more about my communication style, experience the actual lasting effects of certain neurological disorders in geriatric population and most importantly I have been able to give back to this wonderful group of
