The Redhead: A Short Story

Decent Essays
The redhead was relieved when the man didn't pry for more details and took a sip of water. When he replied, she did reconsider her answer yet she well know it was the best choice. Having a bounty hunter in town would raise probably some suspicion and with the bounty hunter being a gal, that would be highly questionable combination. Rumors speared like wildfire and she didn't need her target skipping town before she could even find him. Of course she doubted the man was interested in gossip.

"Nice to meet you to, Harve," Yvonne turned on her chair to face him and smiled, "My name's Yvonne." She was tempted to chuckle at his suaveness but instead there was a glint of amusement in her eyes. Her gaze followed where he was pointing and she spotted

The redhead life is not for the faint of heart; despite our translucent skin, there is much more than meets the eye to know about redheads. It takes tough skin to endure the name-calling, the endless supply of freckles, and the hours of pain due to the ever-so-famous redhead sunburn. In order to be a redhead, one has to be prepared to be known as “that redheaded girl”. One’s name is nonexistent to those outside of the redhead community, and they are almost guaranteed to be known as one or all of the following, “Ginger”, “Ging”, “Red”, or “Carrot Top”.…

“Ginger” and “little red” and “copper head” and the ever so famous “carrot top” were just a few of many nicknames that once taunted my childhood. It seemed to be that I did not have a name, but rather I was just “the redhead.” Always sticking out like a sore thumb, I was surrounded by a family of dark brown hair and undoubtedly seemed to be the only child in the class with the uncommon genes of fiery red hair, a galaxy of freckles that covered my body, and the fairest of skin that would burn at the slightest of interaction with the sun. As a result of the little resemblance I share with my family, people often mistaken me for someone else’s child or demanded an explanation.…

What is the history of the red hair gene and what began the discrimination of redheads in England that is evident still to this day? From the Medieval Ages to present day, prejudices and myths about red hair have been a common occurrence. Throughout different cultures and time periods, redheads have been ridiculed and at times have been victims of resentment and condemnation due to their genetic makeup. Though the history of where these stereotypes materialized needs to be examined more thoroughly, it is unmistakable based on evidence that England in particular appears to have intermittent past and present incidences of prejudice toward people with red hair ("Redheads: Myths, Legends, and Famous Red Hair").…

Lorraine Hansberry’s play, “A Raisin in the Sun”, is about an African American family, the Youngers, who are surrounded by poverty, racism, and family conflict. The Youngers aspire to give themselves a better life to ultimately pass that down to future generations. Their conflict comes into play when the family receives an insurance check for $10,000 and has split decisions on what to do with it. Hansberry’s play suggests that poverty is a symptom of racism by using characters that seem to be of the typical racial stereotypes, and a setting surrounded by racial concepts. This play uses the racial stereotypes of a mammy, jezebel, profligate as well as the racial concepts of institutionalized racism, internalized racism, intraracial racism, and…
