The Red Wheelbarrow Essay

Improved Essays
I’m going to start by saying that poetry is my least favorite type of literature, I find it confusing, and often difficult to interpret. The Red Wheelbarrow is not very long, so it is a bit easier to analyze. I read the poem a few times myself, but was having a hard time painting a picture in my head, so I found a website that allowed me to have The Red Wheelbarrow read aloud. This allowed me to close my eyes, and really think about the words of the poem. After I listened to the poem a few times, I had not only a picture painted in my head, but a better understanding of the poem. I think the beauty in poems such as The Red Wheelbarrow is that there is much room for interpretation. Everyone that reads the poem will most likely have interpreted …show more content…
Like most people, I depend on the necessities of life that we often take for granted such as, food, water, a home, and even a loving family. I think many of us find ourselves dependent on material possessions such as our laptops and cell phones, they make our lives so much easier, and I will admit that I too depend upon those things in my day-to-day life. However, the thing that I depend upon most is a rocking chair that was given to me by my Papa when I was a little girl, my rocking chair is green to represent my favorite color as a child. My rocking chair helps me relax before bed, de-stress from the day, and think about life. Many nights before I go to bed, I will pull my rocking chair up to my bedroom window, open my blinds, and sit there underneath the moonlight for a while and just think. Especially if I have had a rough, or really stressful day, I will grab my journal and rock back and forth underneath the moonlight while I write about the events of my day. I lost my Papa a few years ago, and since he was the one that gave me the rocking chair, I often feel a connection to him while I am writing in my journal. It allows me to feel like he still gets to know what is going on in my life,

I like this poem because of the existential themes that Edward Hirsch tackles, such as: mortality, divinity, temporality, and individuality. I can see all the images that the author describes, and feel that I am a part of the poem, too. Even though it is a short poem, it can transmit so many emotions. I think that this poem is about an old man in a wheelchair (“Wheel me down to the shore”), who feels that he is about to die.…

Novel Theme Essay “If you want something you’ve never had, then you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.” When the author said this, what they really meant was that if you want something, you have to do something that you haven't ever tried to do before. A theme that has held strongly throughout the whole book so far is that you need to work hard for what you want. There were multiple times in the book where Billy got knocked down from going for what he wants but he got back up every time.…

“The hardest part of growing up is letting go of what you were used to, and moving on with something you are not”(Kush and Wizdom). When a child must grow up and become independent, they are subjected to internal conflict. They must muster up confidence in themselves to become an adult who is a dependable part of society and the world. This can make way for feelings of sadness as one realizes their childhood has culminated and they must leave irresponsible, childlike traits behind. In “Bangs” by Jodi Bolfe, “On Turning Ten” by Billy Collins, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, all feature children growing up, trying to find their way.…

TO BILLY: No. While the metaphor is poignant and earnest in its simplicity, the poem is largely unclear and underdeveloped. There are several images presented that may come across as confusing to the reader, as well. First Reader’s Comments: Specific Comments: S2, L1 - I feel as though the use of violent imagery is inconsistent with the idea of fixing a piece of broken glass together with tape.…

As a child living in the Congo, Adah observed the world quietly from the inside of her head. Upon arrival to Africa, she was highly intelligent despite her lack of speech, but still very childlike and sarcastic. The tone of innocence gives the reader a glimpse of the Adah prior to the Congo. For instance, when describing her disabilities, she pretends as though it is a narrative: “Oh, I can easily imagine the fetal mishap: we were inside the womb together dum-de-dum when Leah suddenly turned and declared, Adah you are just too slow.…

The Circle of Life Edward Young, an English poet, had once said. “There is something about poetry beyond prose logic, there is mystery in it, not to be explained but admired.” Poems may use few words, but they can invest the reader as if they’d have read a novel instead of a few stanzas. This is because of an author’s use of the poetic craft to form their vision. Ted Kooser’s poem entitled Mother shows great examples of intense imagery, symbolism, and irony to arouse the emotions of anger and hope.…

When it comes to one single object that I care about more than any other, it would have to be the chain necklace my father gave me before I left for school. At the time, I did not quite understand the depth of the meaning behind it, but there have been times that I rely on it to get me through my day. Two of the most important components in my life are family and hockey. This chain brings them both together and reminds me what I’m striving for. I was a naive fifteen year old that was leaving the family and life I was used to.…

My interpretation of what poetry is most likely the same as what anyone else it is thinking; whatever the poet at the time wants it to be. Poetry is open to anything. It can express anger, happiness, hatred, fear, love, passion, joy and any other form of expressions known to man. Before this assignment I was not big on poetry outside of when it was required to read in school. I decided on the poem “To Change the World Enough” by Alice Walker, mainly because I was able to understand most of what the poem was saying.…

Through developing tone grey is conveying the violence of humanity from guns and robbery, Robert Gray is able to manipulate the reader’s feel of the poem. He is effective in manipulating the reader’s mood to feel detached from the town, therefore allowing the reader to understand his descriptions of the town turning to California. In flames and dangling wire, Gray is conveying his fear of the world becoming a place like the rubbish dumb by blaming society, he is viewing so through his filling of the poem with pessimistic words he is establishing an almost evil tone, which helps in his description of this hell like place. The use and establishment of tone in Grays poem is an effective tool to manipulate the audience. From the quote ‘ It is the always- burning dump’, the metaphor is comparing the environment into a constant burning wasteland, which allows the responder to create an imaginative tactile imagery so they could imagine the scenery in their mind and reflect on their reaction to what they have done to…

Sometimes life is best explained in metaphors. Sometimes the hurt, pain, and anger found in life are more easily grasped when one looks at them in terms of other objects. This is how the poem,“The Minefield,” written by Diane Thiel, looks at pain and anger. Written in short and choppy lines with no clear rhythm or rhyming pattern, this poem tells the story of a man who witnessed his friend blown to pieces in a minefield. Because of this, the man who witnessed this terrifying tragedy has grown into an angry and broken soul.…
