Horses come and go but family is always there. In the book The Red Pony written by John Steinbeck a young boy named Jody learns about the importance of animals and family. John Steinbeck writes about the countryside and uses vivid detail to describe where he grew up. Steinbeck is a well known author with many popular novels including The Red Pony. In this book Steinbeck successfully shows the many lessons a young boy has to learn to be able to grow into a man. In the book The Red Pony there are four small stories all put into one book. The first story consist of the son of Carl, Jody getting a horse. A red pony to be exact. There handyman billy, helps Jody take care of the horse and teaches him how to look after it. When the rain started Jody was still in school, so when he came home and his beloved horse was not put up but instead standing in the cold, pouring rain, Jody was not to happy. Billy had forgot to put the horse up. Soon the horse became very ill. The horse got worse and worse as days went on. One day when Jody got home from school he realized the horse was no longer there. He found the horse in an empty field, dead, being circled by vultures. Jody even kills one of the vultures because it was eating his horse's eye. In the second story in the book The Red Pony, Billy and Jody are in the mountains talkin about the responsibilities of the ancient civilizations living deep in the mountains. In the Third story Jody is given the responsibility of taking care of a cow named Nellie. Jody learns how the cow gives birth and if the calf is placed wrong it could have a miscarriage. In the first section of the story the main character, Jody has to learn the life lesson of tragedy. Jody come home from school and his father, Carl, had surprised him with a red horse. Jody loved this horse with all his heart. Their handy man, Billy, helped Jody take care of the horse and taught him how to brush it and feed it and a lot of other things. One day when Jody was at school it was suppose to rain so Jody was worried about his horse but Billy assured him that he would put the horse up if it started raining. When Jody got home from school its was pouring rain and his horse was still out, Billy had forgot to put him up. This was the first tragedy that billy has to endure, he had felt so bad for his horse, just standing out in the mud in the freezing rain. Later the horse becomes sick and that is the second occurrence of tragedy that Jody has to encounter. He has to sit there and watch his horse get sicker and sicker until one day Jody comes home from school and experiences his third occurrence of tragedy. He comes home to find his horse not in the barn. Jody sees vultures circling around something in a field waiting for it to die. “And in a circle around him (the horse) stood the buzzards, waiting for the moment of death the he knows so well”(93). Jody’s beloved horse had died. This tragic event somewhat changed jody from a young boys to a young adult. He learned that there are
