My Writing Rules

I believe the Red Mountain English department has done a great job over the years in supporting students and their educational path. English teachers have played a great role in our lives, they are the ones who have shaped many of the attending students’ writing abilities. This staff has helped us in various ways. One of the ways was by grading our papers. Although it may not seem like it, it did impact students. It allowed for them, myself included, to reflect on the improvement of our writing. I personally am not a natural writer, unlike other students who were born writers. This leads me to the point that nowadays, various English teachers are telling students that they need to apply certain “writing rules” in order for a specific paper to be outstanding. …show more content…
It seems like each individual student is unique in their writing process and many times, although it may not be noticeable, students tend to feel pressured to apply certain writing “rules”. This is due to the fact that they don’t normally tend to (for example) write an outline before an essay. With all respects, I believe that writing shouldn’t have to always fulfil the specific rules given by the teachers to the students. I believe so because, each and every one of the students has a different writing process that works well for them. As I have grown in my writing literacy, I have noticed that the majority of the time students have been very successful with their writing pieces even though they didn’t follow the rules given to

Throughout the school year as writer, whether it be a school paper, newsletter, article, or poem, there are two specific guidelines to always keep in mind. One of them would be that being a good writes has much less to do with following the guidelines and more to do with having something you want to say and using your words to get the point across. Especially when reading books like To Kill a Mockingbird or The Book Thief there is alway a message portrayed in the passage with massive amounts of meaning so that the reader can actually learn something from the book. You could write the most elegant paper with exquisite vocabulary but if you are not going to say anything meaningful then no one will end up remembering it. Another important guideline…

I teach "Introduction to Literature" and "Standard Freshman Composition" courses at Suffolk County Community College. I personally design both of my courses, which adhere to the mission statement of the college. In "Introduction to Literature," my students engage in imaginative works of literature, analyze major literary themes and forms, continue training in effective prose writing skills, and demonstrate maturity and thought and style when deconstructing literary elements such as image, plot, character, theme, and conflict. In "Standard Freshman Composition," I prepare my students to produce quality work that utilizes writing techniques, analyzes reading material, and incorporates research techniques that will aide them in their academic future. The outcomes of this course are for the student to be able to construct a central purpose in their expository work, to have coherent organization, improved writing mechanics, to formulate effective thesis statements that demonstrate complex thought, and to integrate relevant, cited sources into their work.…

    1) Honestly, I believe that my writing in this class reveals that I am not a great writer and I am not fluent in English, at all. Even though I have passed the California English (or ESL) standard test for English learner or students that have English as a second language, however, I am still not very proficient in the language. For example, I have a difficult time pronouncing the plurals when I read something out loud and I still continue to make simple grammar mistakes in my writing. Furthermore, my recent writing assignments have been improved, thanks to Paper Rater. Additionally, I am very surprised and proud at the same time to think that I can keep up with the high honor expectations in an honor English class.…

Writing diagnostics are used throughout our district and many others across the country. They help teachers get an idea of each of their students’ strengths and weaknesses within writing. All while understanding this, it is also a waste of time. In all of my high school years, all I have ever heard was, “ I am not doing any work unless it has an effect on my grade”.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

“Take advantage of my class now because you’re not going to have it this easy when you get to college.” This is a sentence used by not all, but most of my high school teachers, usually after they’ve extended a deadline that the majority of the class had failed to meet. I think when situations like this arise, they have to stop and ask themselves if they’ve failed as teachers or if we’ve failed as students. Nonetheless, the deadline still gets extended. I’ve taken all Pre-AP high school courses, all promising to prepare me for college, yet I sit here in front of my computer doing extensive research on what a proper MLA format paper looks like.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
