The Red Monologue

Cast:

Phil: Tall, black hair, pale in complexion. Piercing blue eyes and a matching tie over his plain

white t-shirt. Has lived in America all of his life and feels like he knows what is best for the

country, even though he is only 24.

Martha: Phil’s mother in her late 40’s, though she looks 60. Has a history with drug abuse of all

kinds, but she has been clean for 11 years now. Dressed in loose, torn up clothing by choice.

Stan: Phil’s extremely gifted 7 year old son. Eyes like his father’s, blonde like his deceased

mother. Dressed in a suit coat and a blue bowtie, combed back hair, and dress shoes, as if he was

going to go out to vote.

Stage Directions:

The morning of voting day at an unknown U.S. town of an unknown year in the future. Takes

Phil: (angrily) Well then, Stan, who do you think should lead us?

(Sudden silence. Stan looks up at Phil, who is red with rage. He looks back down at his toys.)

Stan: I like Roberts.

Martha: He does have nice hair.

Stan: Like a pillow.

Phil: (confused) I can’t vote for Andrews because he is fake, and I can’t vote for Hughes because

he’s bald. Who am I supposed to vote for?

Stan: Roberts.

Martha: Or Stewarts.

Phil: (irritated) Stewarts? Do you want to know why I refuse to vote for Stewarts?

Martha: (sarcastically) Because she’s a woman?

Phil: Oh you women, always standing up for each other!

Martha: Then what is your reason?

Phil: (irritated) I don’t need to answer you!

Stan: But what is your reason, Daddy?

Phil: Well I’ll tell you son. (these next lines are said rapidly as if he is ranting) I can wrap up

my explanation in two words, as a matter of fact. South. America. More specifically Argentina.

Argentina has had woman leaders. They have one right now. What has Argentina done for the

world? Nothing. Zippidy-do-da. Right now is a terrible time to be a South American.

Behind this scene is a hilarious person who likes apples, butter, and cinnamon and who was constantly making me laugh. He was born and raised in Moultrie and that is his current home. Bruises hurt. Growing up with the uncomfortable yellow-green of an old battle wound sustained from being an adventurous kid wasn't much of a surprise. The off-shade violet of a deep one, or the angry red of an underdeveloped one, on the other hand, is a more recent discovery. Receiving them daily has become a required hindrance when being chased by your neighbor's sex crazed Pit bull. I could have gotten a car to avoid him --my town is small and my mother never thought I needed one--…

The basketball swished, going into the hoop. Circling, through the time of malevolence and gangs at Senya:the city, mostly populated by people that weren’t as well off;had food stamps;had heart disease;had problems. Wishing it would just go down a magical fountain or better yet, a clean drinkable fountain. Streetball, everybody played, joyful —looking softly and nicely when they reflect on when the hoops weren’t broken.…

Originality and individuality are things that have become ambiguous and misrepresented in today's society. Living a unique life is valued by some, but ridiculed by others. To Ralph Waldo Emerson, living by one's own convictions was highly valued. Emerson wrote maxims about how to live life which had a central theme of self-reliance. All of the maxims he wrote were applicable to "The Night Thoreau Spent…

The text from popular culture I have chosen for this essay is “The Simpsons”. This cartoon has become a household name and a cultural phenomenon across the world. The election is rigged, unless Trump wins. Trump’s repeated claim that the election is rigged is unfounded, almost certainly false, and threatens the foundation of our democratic society. Every time he feels threatened or his poll numbers drop, he becomes an eight year old who can’t admit he lost his little league game and blames it on the umpire's bad call. But Trump isn’t an eight year old and the ‘game’ he is playing will decide the future of America. Trump is a candidate, that even at the best of times, is difficult to take seriously, but when he has called out the Republican party, the judicial system, and even the Emmy’s for being rigged against him, who can take him seriously?…

    Abortions In Argentina

It might be surprising to know, but actually “As of the 2015 elections, Argentina has a higher percentage of women in elected seats in both the National Lower House and the Senate than the world averages: 35.8 percent and 41.7 percent, respectively, in comparison with 22.9 percent and 22.3 percent” (McCay). Something that is often forgotten is the fact that even though inequality might be fought against and protested, without people in politics agreeing with the movement, things will never change. That is why when discussing women rights it is so important to help women understand and encourage them to become an active participant in politics. The fact that Argentina has allowed women to significantly engage in politics is a major factor as…
