While a person can feel comfortable in their environment, there are situations that can lead to someone felling less “at home” in an environment that they previously felt at home in. In The Red Convertible, Henry and Lyman grew up on a reservation. They both felt as though they were big fish in a small pond. Lyman made money easily, but finances did not come as easily for Henry. The brothers felt at home on the reservation until Henry went off to serve in war for the Military. Once Henry returned from the war he was never the same and never again felt “at home” in his home, or in his head. He went from feeling like he belonged on the reservation, to feeling like a stranger to the reservation. Henry being in the military altered his sense of what “home” is. We can turn anything, anywhere into a “home”. Four walls do not define home, home is rather defined by the state of mind the person is in when referring to “home”. Home to me is the house that I grew up in, the river that I spent many summers getting burnt to a crisp tubing down, the smell of my childhood bedroom when I walk into it for the first time in a while. Home is the bumpy dirt road that my truck barrels down in the back woods that I grew up in. Home is my daughter’s toys thrown all over the house, and the love that I feel when I come home after a long day at work. Home is my family surrounded by the tree at Christmas time, and the taste of sweet tea as I watch my daughter and her cousins play in the back yard. Home is all the places that when I go to them I feel peaceful. Home can be a place, a feeling, indoors or outdoors, home has no boundaries because home is whatever I make it and the concept of what home is to me is forever
