Many conflicts can occur between families for many different reasons. The most common one a person goes through is between a parent and child. This is what happens when Nwoye doesn’t achieve the expectations that his father Okonkwo holds for him: “‘At his age I was already fending for myself’”(Achebe 66). According to the Igbo people’s standard of being a man, Nwoye is very “womanly”. Okonkwo also sees that Nwoye is becoming lazy:“‘To much of his grandfather’...the same thought also came to Okonkwo’s mind”(Achebe 66). Nwoye’s grandfather Unoka was a very lazy man, and was also very heavy in debt. Nwoye is very wary of the rules and traditions that he and his people have, this feeling appeared even more when Ikemefuna died, “However, in the death of Ikemefuna, all of Nwoye’s weaknesses are revealed”(Haas 1).Because he, in a way, lost a role model:”It is unveiled in that Nwoye’s masculinity and confidence was solely dependent on Ikemefuna, and never a true part of his own personality”(Haas 1).Someone to look up to as a big brother.
