Jose Vargas’s story is one of fear, secrets, and struggles with a glimmer of hope at the end. You may see all of his struggles as just a mass of problem after problem without any significance in the individual stories. I do not believe this to be true. I believe one story in particular was used as an excellent tool. The story of Jose’s coming out as a homosexual was used to show what was to come.…

Human beings are a very interesting species. We look for patterns in our fellow beings, and form opinions about those people that shape how we treat them. Such patterns in these people are called stereotypes, and they are more prominent when the patterns are uncommon. In The Laramie Project, a true story, Matthew Shepard was a bright and vibrant young adult. Sadly, he was targeted and beaten to death due to the fact that he was a homosexual.…

In a world of injustice and hatred, one would believe that people would at least have the audacity to respect others playing the cruel game of life. Homosexuals have faced many hardships and discriminatory laws that have suggested that they differ from heterosexuals and do not deserve equality. The unjust treatment towards homosexuals lacks mutual respect to marriage laws, adoption policies, and job opportunities. Homosexual couples may not fit the generic standards of what is considered normal in society but are humans, a part of our own species, and just as equally worthy of all rights that heterosexual couples have. On the other hand, there is a number of people who believe that homosexuality is a sin and against their religion, and others…

Gay love has been an issue for the longest now and it’s beginning to get out of hand. But that’s not the only thing that’s getting out of hand, what also is getting out of hand is societies view on those who are transgender. Which brought to my attention that some people are so reluctant to change that they resort violence and brute force in order to shape things into their image whenever something that they say is wrong starts to occur. They are only interested and care about what they want to see is “right” day to day. The way we approach people who are gay or transgender is outright ridiculous and ignorant which can easily be added to the millions of other situations where ignorance has occurred in history.…

In the case of sexual orientation, bigotry has resulted in negative perceptions of LGBT people. Those negative perceptions are often based on personal insecurity, stereotypical views, interpretation of religious texts, and state sponsored discrimination. For example, until 2003, homosexuality was effectively criminalized as sodomy in fourteen states.…

Homosexuality has always been a controversial topic in the United States, especially last year when the law changed for same-sex individuals are now able to get married. I attended a Catholic private school in middle school, in which we learned about God and the Bible. We were taught that people could be gay but that they could not act upon it, but it was best not to be gay because that not what God intended us to be. The idea of being gay was so abstract, I always wonder if a person was born that way or choose to be that way. I remember having my first experience of close friends coming out to me as a lesbian.…

Homosexuality was not accepted for a long time particularly due to religious views which had an impact on everyday society’s beliefs. Passages in the Old Testament in the Christian Bible would imply that homosexuality should not to be tolerated. Society then began to have a completely judgemental opinion of homosexuals, and needed to come up with an excuse for why they were different. Doctors believed that there was error with their brain; therefore it was a mental illness. Curing homosexuality with aversion therapy was an extreme and torturous treatment.…

First of all, the struggle of being denied basic privileges hindered early LGBT movements. Starting as early as around the 1950s, the government took away a diverse selection of vital rights from the LGBT community. For example, many homosexuals were denied the right of custody and visitation of their own children and also were restricted from going into bars starting post World War 2 (Newman). In addition to this, the government denied homosexexuals the oppurtunity of being public school teachers and holding a federal, state, or local level governmental position (Newman). President Dwight Eisenhower was so strongly against homosexuals holding governmental positions that he issued an investigation to find all gays working for the government,…
