In the 19th century, slavery is something accepted by most of the white population in the south and therefore a lot of black suffer enormously. Since the conditions are really terrible and harsh, most of the slaves want to become free men. Frederick Douglass is one of the numerous slaves that finally succeed in making his escape from slavery. He is able to do so because of his education and his perseverance.
First of all, a lot of factors lead to the freedom of Frederick Douglass but the most important one is his education. It starts when Mrs. Auld starts teaching him a couple of things. “Very soon after I went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Auld, she very kindly commenced to teach me the A.B.C. After I had learned this, she assisted me in learning how to spell words of three or four letters”(p.960). A little bit later Mr. Auld stops Mrs. Auld to teach Frederick. He said: “ it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read” (p.960). It is another important factor in Frederick Douglass since he for the first time commences to understand reach freedom. Even thought Mr. and Mrs. Auld don’t want him to learn anymore, he finds another way to learn how to read and write. “ The plan which I adopted, and the one by I was successful was that of making friends of all the little white boys whom I met in the street. As many of these as I could, I converted into teachers.”(p.962) He is giving them food to them in exchange of their help. For Frederick Douglass his education and his perseverance is the main reason of his freedom. He is a slave that went throw a lot and achieve the dream of all the other black slaves. He created his own luck and has been able to get away from that terrible
