There has been a lot said over recent years about college graduates and if getting that college degree is even worth it anymore. Personally, I believe that it is worth it, as long as you have prepared before hand by choosing a program or field that you are passionate about and is growing. David Brooks argues that the reason current college graduates are not prepared is because of the shock of going from a rigorously structured life to extreme openness and freedom. The graduates are not ready to take off and fly from the nest when all the generations before them have. College graduates today are not as ready for life after college as they think they are due to how graduates’ parents chose to raise them, not realizing what the job market is demanding, and a distorted view of their own preparedness.
I have noticed that parenting styles today seem to go to two extremes, the first being strict or “helicopter” parents. Children that have parents like this are usually perform well at school and other activities their parents have planned for them to do throughout their life. With it though comes a strict schedule, early bedtimes, and usually some (or a lot) of social awkwardness. For example, +59% of students said they were prepared to apply their knowledge to the real world, while just 23% of employers said so. Also, students who said they were well prepared for 15 career-learning outcomes were at least double the percentage of their employers who thought so too. This shows a large disconnect from what a student believes a job requires and what it actually
