SLC 101 Reflection Essay

SLC 101 is a comprehensive look at the realm of relational leadership and its uses in contrast to traditional styles of leadership. While other styles emphasize a head figure that controls his subordinates, relational leadership describes a network of motivated individuals pushing for a common goal. This course will describe the concepts of this revolutionary method and also the skills needed to carry it out. We will be studying real life organizations and how their topdown model works. This gives realworld insight on the topic at hand. Various companies will contrast with each other and we, as studentleaders, will be able to decide for ourselves how the techniques differ. The course is also designed to impact my own leadership potential …show more content…
For me, I want to be an influential figure in whatever field I work in. This includes being a role model and being easy to work with. The objectives of SLC 101 line up nicely with that goal and will help me grow to be able to achieve it. I believe the relational leadership model is one that will fit with my personality well. My approach to working with people is getting to know them and being friendly when attempting to solve problems together. The university setting has helped me realize that I’m adept at making “study buddies” in classes that I can discuss the material with in and out of the classroom. This skill can be taken to a workplace or anywhere else. When the stakes are set and a common goal is needed to be reached, I will put everything on the line and relate myself with my teammate or peer. Connecting this to the SLC course will allow me to expand upon this quality, making my sociability skills even stronger. These “soft” skills can be used anywhere in life. So far in college, I’ve already seen a growth in reaching out to people and making friends. I can only see this grow even more as I aim to become a stronger leader. On top of this, I will be able to solidify my ethics and morals through the exploration and selfassessment parts of the class. Introspective discussions will open the floor to hearing other peoples’ opinions. Being able to accept those views and even juxtaposing them with

The relational leadership model that was taught to me in HDF 415 is one of my favorite models, because it involves knowing the individuals you are leading, and using that knowledge to empower them, and help them grow as a leader. I see this theory come out a lot on the North Woods Challenge course. When facilitating a retreat for the challenge course the leader must be inclusive of everyone, there will be people who’s’ biggest challenge is getting out of the car and into the mud, and there are others who will be trying to swing from tree to tree. The differences don’t stop there, but as always the leader must be respectful and inclusive towards all of those participating. The entire challenge course is process-oriented and is done to help the…

I have been blessed to be a part of my Leadership class for the past three years now, and have lived off the motto of “service above self” because of it. By being given the opportunity to embrace this involvement, I aspire to bring my understandings to Santa Clara University. I believe that I can embrace Santa Clara’s visions, especially that of educating capable leaders to build a more humane world. Like most people, the third grade was a highly intense time. This was the period in which you had to decipher between wanting to learn how to multiply or learn how to divide first. Or for me the most difficult decision may have been choosing between kickball and tetherball during recess. But I had an issue of seeing adults doing things and if it was simple I would do them too. For me as a child I had what many considered an old sold.…

When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. Based on my prior experience in honors english for two years, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Literature, English 101 honors is the best fit for my experience and my level of meticulous and strategic writing at this point. Writing and reading have always come easy to me in school; whether reading to write a book review for the class or reading for the AP exam, I have excelled with high honors and the highest remarks from the faculty on my writing and style. English has always been one of my best subjects. Most of my english teachers were pretty impressed with my writing skills and with my advanced vocabulary for my age. My 9th grade english teacher even thought that I should get into writing, whether as a blogger or as an journalist.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…
