The Pros And Cons Of Television Series Survivor

Improved Essays
After 33 seasons, we have seen the Television Series Survivor become the Grandfather of reality television in the United States. We have also seen Survivor struggle against other line ups and move days in order to not lose viewers. The show has long been hailed as the topic of conversation around water coolers, but it may be time they faced their own elimination.

The year 2000 brought a new era of reality tv to the forefront. The concept of 16 castaways being stranded on a deserted island, competing for luxuries and voting each other off one by one, was a new concept to most of us. It made us look at the basis of human relationships and see how perfect strangers can form friendships and enemies right away. This made most of us stop and watch fascinated to see how each person developed being watched by cameras on the beautiful beaches of Palau. The challenges to win luxuries were new and different. These were based on the culture and history of the island and got all of us involved in becoming fans for our own survivor. Slowly we started to see how reality television could be family entertainment and not only for M TV. The show really was ahead of it’s time and spawned a ton of reality game shows after it.

I don’t think it would stand the test of time if it was starting out this season. Reality TV has seen a sharp decline. Television in general has seen a decline in viewership. Cinematic effect is all the rage in top rated shows on cable, Survivor’s helicopter scene footage is far from award winning. Over the past decade we have seen the awards for this show turn from wins, to nominations, and now rarely an honorable mention in the Emmy’s. I obviously am not alone in my boredom in recent seasons. Hollywood as a whole agrees. The Ratings have been in decline for some time. CBS is still pushing

Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. Resent studies have started to examine the effects media can have on attitudes…

According to Catherine Orenstein, people today have been fantasizing over the storybook romance because they are obsessed with finding their own happily ever after. Our infatuations over fairy tales have been strongly shaped by romance-based reality television. In “Fairy Tales and a Dose of Reality,” Orenstein argues that reality television gives a false sense of hope of what love actually is: the television shows promote that love is based off status and appearance. According to Orenstein, in the original Cinderella story, Prince Charming falls for Cinderella’s gown and slippers but fails to recognize her face (285). Society’s expectations on what love and romance should be contradict the original fairy tales’ meanings.…

Jersey Shore is an American reality television series which originally run on MTV from December 3, 2009 until December 20, 2012 in the United States. The show follows the lives of eight housemates spending their summer at Jersey Shore, New Jersey. The morality of this show can be questioned since members usually behave like reckless teenagers. Certainly there is not underage drinking, but we have to question ourselves why is this behavior shown on air as normal and acceptable. Moreover, reality-show culture has boomed nowadays, rushing the degeneration and helping to create a society in which celebrities (known thanks to technology) are the new nobility.…

His overall argument that reality TV is beneficial matches with this statement because Hirschorn believes to not look at reality shows and take them literally or face value. Instead he believes it is necessary that shows be more deeply observed and says, “The competitions and elimination shows are latter-day Milgram experiments that place real people in artificial situations,”(Hirschorn 1). This statement explains how crucial these shows are in describing what people do in these controlled environments. Hirschorn also includes the Survivor and describes it as a,”fantasy and more a metaphor for an imagined post-apocalyptic future,” (Hirschorn 1), giving the show a Lord of the Flies storyline, but with fun competitions; and instead of kids dying contestants get voted off the island. Also, in these quotes he makes good use of metaphors by comparing reality shows to “Milgram experiments” and “an imagined post-apocalyptic future,”.…

“The Bachelor” Recap: Analysis ABC, a popular television station known for news and for its hit tv shows, recently published an article on their blog, giving the world a full recap of the reality TV show, “The Bachelor”. However, the author’s purpose in writing this article was not intended to be giving a recap of the show, but to spark interest in their audience and encourage said audience to start watching the series and the station as a whole. The article’s use of rhetorical elements such as the recap from the station itself, the intended audience, its author’s views, the video and links embedded within the article itself, and the dramatic reality of ABC’s hit TV show, “The Bachelor,” support the overall purpose and goal to promote the show…
