Is Hamlet Crazy Or Insane Analysis

In Act II Scene I Ophelia explains to her father Polonius how when she went to see Hamlet he was acting crazy. He grabbed her by the wrist and ran his hand down the side of her face. He stood nodding his head just staring at her for a long time which was weird to her. Her father took her to go speak with Hamlets, Uncle Claudius who is now the new king. Most people bring up the question on whether Hamlet was pretending the whole time or was he really insane. Many believe that Hamlet was insane from the beginning. Others believe that he was pretending to be insane up until the point when he figured out who murdered his father and then he really turned insane. He now knows the truth about what Claudius did to his father. Hamlet was so upset with Claudius that one day he accidently killed Ophelia’s father Polonius. “Hamlet achieve revenge in a vacant world of accident”(Stirling 331). Hamlet was in a room speaking with his mother when he heard someone behind the curtain. He thought it was Claudius but it ended up being Polonius. He has let his anger get the best of him because he was unable to stop himself once he started stabbing the curtain. Hamlet is starting to show how he is becoming unstable as he sits down beside Polonius’s body.
