In chapter two of Micheal Carolan’s book The Real Cost of Cheap Food he analyzes the mass production of food how it affects the global economy. He proposes that in a global effort to make grain prices lower, the international community has slowed progress for developing nations and done a disservice to small farms. Carolan’s claim that cheaper food makes a negative impact on smallholder farms is supported by urban bias. As nations began the process of urbanization, legislators allocated more money into these urban regions rather than farms. Urbanization created an increased dependence on agriculture yet left no funding to support it. This caused small farmers to go out of business and agricultural corporations to take their place.
