At one point in the story Hanna leaves Michael unexpectedly, and in the book, we get more insight to his thoughts during the period without her. He ends up getting married, but only for a small period of time, and it’s clear through the book his mind is absolutely ruined. In Part 2 of the book, Michael talks about life after she left him. He describes his college life to be enjoyable, and easy but he admits to having an “arrogant superiority”. On page eighty-nine he talks about his ruined romantic feelings. While at University, he makes love with a former girl he went to school with, Sophia, and she realized he wasn’t interested in her, and asked what’s wrong with him. He then describes that feelings of affection bring a lump to his throat even if not directed towards him. At the bottom of page eighty-nine it says, “This juxtaposition of callousness and extreme sensitivity seemed suspicious even to me”.
