The Raven Symone Analysis

Raven Symone has surpassed the child actor curse and become known, not only for her acting roles when she was young, for her present day persona. Raven has said many things that people agree with, and some that people do not. In interviews she says, she does not want to be labeled gay or African-American. Speaking to Oprah, she said, “I am American”. I think the uproar that stemmed from this is focused more on snippets of the conversation not the whole message. In saying that she is does not want to be called African-American or gay, Raven is honing in on labels, and the stereotypes that may come out of them. She tries to relate the message the she is more than one word. Of course, it is important to recognize one’s culture – gay or African-American – but the point is to not let it be all that someone is, which is the danger with labels. …show more content…
It is all around us, and a part of our culture – predominately a negative part. We are judged on our sexual preference, our size, our race, anything really. Our culture is focused on labels, and making one thing define a person. There is probably a psychological reason for this, some aid to help us through the changing world or something else. Simply, though, this inclination needs to be curbed, especially because it turns people into one thing. He is the funny guy; she is the black girl, etc. We are not one thing; we are a culmination of everything around us. As Raven says, we are human and should be viewed as humans with good or bad qualities, not

After seeing all of the controversy with Raven Symone, I have to say that I disagree with her however, I do understand the point she is trying to make. I disagree with her saying that she would not hire an individual because their name is hard to pronounce or is ghetto because it is true that we did not choose to be named what we are named and no one should be denied a great opportunity with a job or career simply because of their name. However, I do think that what she is trying to bring light to, makes great sense. It is important for PARENTS, give your child a STEADY name because in the world that we live in, it can become very challenging for child to become very successful in life ( job searching, college applications, career goals) if…

“Do not judge a book by the cover”: children have been told this for centuries, so why is it that adults do not abide by their own advice? Judging, or classifying, others based off of outward characteristics has been a problem throughout the world for centuries. Over time, things have begun to equal out socially for all races in the world, but out of habit humans still stereotype one another based off of looks, skin color, or social standing. These stereotypes have been shaped over time and have become intertwined into society. Classification tends to be a general indication of a certain type of person based off of other people’s opinions; however, this does not represent the entirety of those people with similar characteristics.…

The Raven Reader Response The distinction between imagination and real life in literature is sometimes hard to identify. The authors of these types of works make imagination seem so realistic that the audience begins to believe the character's imagination. In the poem, The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, an imaginary bird, or perceived to be an imaginary bird, flies into the narrator's home late in the night signaling to him that death was on its way. The bird in this poem may seem real but there are many signs that it is not.…

A common theme in Audre Lorde’s “Zami: A New Spelling of My Name” is the idea of intersectionality and how these different categories make up a person’s identity. Lorde has many different identities that make her a whole. She has a hard time separating these things within her, because she is never just Black, or just a women, or just a lesbian. However, she is often forced to pick between her identities and is rarely allowed or comfortable enough expressing all three. Therefore, she quite often has to choose a part of herself to repress in front of others in order to be accepted as part of the group.…
