Situations enter into life as a test, in which must you decide the outcome. When there is an inability to overcome this situation, it may become the biggest obsession in your mind. In the stories “The Raven” and “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe the reader is introduced to a world when an event in your life has the ability to paralyze and transform your life. “The Raven” is a poem about a man who has lost the love of his life, Lenore. The man is seeking the ability to remove the sorrow that has once filled his heart and be able to rest from the pain. Many of his stories focussed on similar topics which, hence, caused many of his pieces to have many similarities. In “The Tall Tale Heart” and “The Raven” the two stories seem to both occur at night, in particular they both occur during midnight. In “The Raven” it says, “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.” (Paragraph 1). In addition, in “The Tell Tale Heart” it says, “And this I did for seven long nights - every night just at midnight - but I found the eye always closed.” (Page 60). As you read these quotes they both mention and occurrence of action during midnight. This is important because it adds to the story expressing how the time of day is able to make the story. In “The Raven” a man is lying down in bed when he hears a gentle tap at his chamber door. If this scene occurred during an early part of the day the reaction the man would be extremely different. In the quote from “The Tell Tale Heart” it begins to show the reader that something suspicious is occurring at midnight. In these two stories it is important to address the fact that they both occur at midnight. This small detail is something that wouldn 't be taken very seriously, but it makes the story. The time of day is important to the message of the story because it is part of the setting. This is one of the many substantial ways Poe uses similarities in his stories.
