Age groups from 26 to 49 have a higher rate of mental illness. The increase in the mental illness rate could be due to the different factors like income, substance use, and family influences. Age groups between 26 to 49 are more likely to have family, marriage and work. This is the age where most people start to become more responsible and also start a clear path to where their life is going. All of those responsibilities and obligations increases stress which increase the risk of getting mental illness. The age group from 18-26 also have a higher mental illness rate comparing to age groups above 49 and below the age of 18. This could be the result of the fact that this age group is in school or working to achieve the future they desire.
Race is also the other determinant of higher rate of mental illness. 4.4 percent of white ethnicity is affected by mental illness followed by 3.5 percent of Hispanic and 3.1 percent Black (Hidden, Kennet, Lipari, Lipari, & Tice, 2016). One of the reason for the mental illness rate difference among race might be the due genetic make-up that is more disposed to the disorder. what are the determinants of mental illness, when is the right time to go forward for treatment for mental illness, and what are the genetic factors that could expose someone to mental illness?
