Throughout my time in this course, I definitely gained a lot of education and insight into the many different religions of the world. Not only did a learn many new facts regarding religions I was not aware of, but I also learned a great many things about Christianity and developed a better understanding of the story and start of the most dominant faith of the world. When it came time to pick a research subject, one celestial event that came to mind that I have definitely heard of, but was not very educated on, was the rapture. I decided to devote my time to gain a better understanding of this widely talked about event. To the many people that may have not been raised in conjunction with the Christian faith, such as myself, would probably question what the rapture is. Camping claimed that the Bible was his source and say May 21st would be the date of the Rapture and the day of judgement “beyond the shadow of doubt.” He suggested 6 pm local time, with the Rapture sweeping across the globe, time zone by time zone. The vast majority of Christian groups did not accept Camping’s predictions. Some even explicitly rejected them, citing Bible passages including the words of Jesus Christ stating “about that day or hour no one knows” (Matthew 24:36). Following the failure of the prediction, media attention shifted to Camping’s response. On May 23rd, he stated that May 21st, had been a “spiritual” day of judgement and the physical Rapture would occur on October 21, 2011. However, on October 16th, Camping admitted in an interview that he did not know when the end of the world would come and made no public comment after October 21st, passed without his predicted
