The articles presented by both Kristof and Kaleem explore the importance of the humanities, and how it can be a positive influence on the development of critical thought, intellect, and emotional intelligence. The combination of these factors contributes, in my opinion, to a more well-rounded (spiritually, emotionally, intellectually) individual. Nicholas Kristof's article explores, compares, and contrasts how the liberal arts and humanities are a skill that is just as necessary, and just as relevant, as any level of technical acumen. He suggests that the humanities are more than just superfluous knowledge, but a conduit or pathway to soul enrichment. I agree with Kristof's assertions that liberal arts "equip students with communications…
Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are often perceived as discordant with one another, providing conflicting perspectives on theology and worship. However, these three faiths are interrelated, even complementary, in terms of tradition, origin, and practice. This interrelation is no more apparent than in the narrative of Abraham and the binding of his son, Isaac/Ishmael, which was first recorded in Genesis 22. All three faiths view this story as significant, however there is a disjunction within the details of the narrative as well as what should be taken from the teachings. This paper will analyze these three faiths, by looking through the lens of Abraham’s story and will discuss how the narrative acts as both a unifying and an alienating force…

Throughout history people have turned to sacred beliefs for sense of well-being, gathering with others whom share their interests, or simply for a guided way of life to live by. Some of the world cultures have rituals, sacred grounds, even objects of common use to represent the practices in which they hold so dearly, for the majority of cultures, religion, typically with a worshiped deity, if not more than one, and a literary central religious text to live by, is how the rest of the religious world practices their beliefs. I wanted a personal adaptation of beliefs; one not led by spiritual guides, but steered by my own attempt at becoming my own spiritual guide in understanding the unseen. I started to de-spiritualize the role of the baba, viewed them largely as other members of the…
Why do groups of people need a religious system in order to form stable cultures and societies? In his address before the Farmington Trust, philosopher Edward Goldsmith argues the importance of religion as a control mechanism for a stable society. He discusses a philosophy in which, “(Religion) provides a goal, whose achievement must ensure the society’s stable relationship with its environment, and a means of achieving this goal, i.e. a ‘hierarchical organisation of instructions or guidelines.’” (Goldsmith) In order to illustrate this organization, provided for by religion, and vital to a stable society, aspects of Ancient Greek culture are highlighted.…
