The Raisin In The Sun African-American Dream

The play we read in class was The Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. It was a play about an African-American family living in an apartment in Chicago during times of segregation and diversity between the whites and blacks. All the characters in the play have dreams which we all have dreams we strive to achieve but find that we have road blocks trying to achieve them. The character I picked from the play to talk about their dreams and limitations is Beneatha Younger. Beneatha’s biggest dream in the play was to attend college as a young African-American woman. Not only did she want to go to college, but she wanted to go to become a doctor. In today’s world that would be a normal dream for an African-American woman but in their world it …show more content…
Obviously college costs money and being a colored family in Chicago at this time it wasn’t the easiest to make good money. Beneatha also wasn’t the only one living in the apartment, she lived with her brother, Walter Lee, his wife, Ruth, their son, Travis, and Her and Walter’s mother, Mama. With everyone living together the income didn’t all go to Beneatha’s college fund. The family did come into some money when Beneatha and Walter’s dad died and Mama was receiving the insurance check of $10,000. Beneatha obviously wanted some of the money to pay for medical school. I do believe that she should get some of the money because to achieve this dream would be a big deal in this time especially for a colored woman to achieve would be an even bigger deal. One of her limitations was that Walter Lee also wanted some of the money to buy a liquor store with some friends to make a living for the family. Yet, In my opinion Beneatha’s dream was even bigger than that because she was dedicated and determined and wanted this dream for a very long time and finally has the opportunity to achieve it. Mama conquers her dream and buys her family a house since

Like Mama, moving to the north for a better life, and Walter trying to be more of a provider for his family even though his plans do not work out. But one character was a prime example of going against all the norms of the day. Beneatha Younger is a female African American who has dreams of becoming a doctor. Kind of like Olive in “Little Miss Sunshine” she is going against a society with unfair, prejudice norms. The challenges of becoming a doctor in Beneatha’s situation can be compared to the beauty pageant Olive contests in.…

African Americans struggled the most when it came to having the same opportunities to achieve the American Dream. Regardless that hasn’t deterred them from still striving for more in a society that was not originally set up for them to succeed. Like most others African Americans did not really have a choice in whether or not they wanted to come to America or not. They were made to come here and were enslaved. The patterns of exclusion were obvious throughout history that at certain times the dream was indeed more attainable to some people more than others.…

These aspirations were and still are the hopes and goals society offers to all of us, unfortunately, many African-Americans rarely achieved and experienced them. Both writings depict the unfair treatment of African-Americans during the 1960’s with each implying how, discrimination and segregation, made achieving these dreams virtually insurmountable for most of the black population. The main difference between the play and the poem are the endings.…

Moreover, contrary to Beneatha who wants to change the world from her effort of study, Walter shows a conformist image by himself with a sentence: “I didn 't make this world [, and] it was [given] to me this way" (Hansberry 989). Therefore, for him who thinks like that, his dream that wants to use the insurance money to invest in a shaky business to make a great deal of money is understandable result differently from Beneatha who wants to spend the money for education. On the other hand, even if Beneatha has many hobbies that are utterly incompatible with her family’s economy such as “riding a horse [and] playing the guitar,” this shows that she is a character who has an intelligence,…

A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, delves into the African American psyche during the 1950’s in the way a lower class black family deals with acquiring new money and moving into a new neighborhood. All of the members of this family have their own dreams, and the different ways they handle their dreams getting seemingly crushed reveals a lot about the African American psyche during this time period. Beneatha, the daughter of Mama and sister of Walter, has a dream to become a doctor and take care of people, but due to the sexism and racism of her peers, it becomes nigh impossible for her to achieve her dream. Because of the time period she lives in, her dream is marginalized and discounted by everyone she meets, including her own family.…
