My main subject is house and environment. The Radiant Way begins with the preparations for the party that Liz gives in New Years Eve. At first I focus on the environment that Liz and Shirley lives and when I talk about them, I will compare the middle class and working class. (Liz = Middle Class – Shirley = Working Class) Liz is living in Harley Street with her family. Rich families are living in Harley Street. Harley street is far away from London and guests find that the party is hard to come. (Esther and Alix meets in the halfway) but when we check out Shirley’s location, Northam is a small, paratichal city. It’s a place where the working class lives.

We can understand the building of the house is different as well. As the writer says “At half past eight she will go downstairs to see what is happening in the kitchen”1 so we can understand that her house is doublex or triplex or something else like that. But when we check the Shirleys part, author talks about her neighbors so her house is an ordinary apartment in working class area.

She just sits and thinks. We can’t see her preparation so much. She just thinks, thinks and thinks. Lizs part of the book reminds me James Joyce’s Ulysees. Margaret Drabble uses “steam of consiousness” in Lizs part. So we can not make so much comment for the house in this part. When Liz just thinks, Shirley has to prepare
