The phrase “survival of the fittest” has been a stated time after time. What is this phrase really referring to? In the early 1900s a theory known as the Lombroso theory claim this very phrase. This theory argued that criminals were less involved than non criminals, because of physical features. In other words, a criminal was not made, but born a criminal. The now dominate theory, Biosocial Theory of Crime, suggest that criminals and non criminals are no different from one another.

Both the Self-Control theory and Biosocial theory relate in a sense of arguing that childhood and the environment in which the person lives in and spends the most time in determines the individuals like hood of becoming a criminal. Researches find that if children go through parental abuse within their childhood, the child’s level of delinquency will be higher than others. Children seeing the repetitive abuse within the household will increase the possibilities of the child to also engage in abusive behavior.
The Gottfredson and Hischi’s (1990) theory explains that the lack of “self-control” can be the source of a criminal like behavior. The self- control theory argues that criminal demeanor are established within the individuals childhood and the self-control will stabilize throughout the life time course. In the Biosocial and Trait Theories, Laub and Sampson (1991) suggest that crime is looked at not the differences between the individuals but the differences in the social environments in which each person is exposed to. Since there is little research on it there is not to say if there are individuals who do have a crime like personality. Referencing the textbook and various articles, the personality crime theory only is tested when the individual is already convicted or has self-reported. One thing I would suggested should be different is to make a test that does not only detect criminal like traits on convicted criminals, but also have test that determine whether or not every person could have the possibility have becoming a criminal. Creating a new sophisticated instrument that would allow police officers and other law enforcement detect traits especially with children at a young age. Although this will not prevent criminals to stop committing crimes it will help law enforcement know the mind of a
