I have had enough of her. “Get out,” I said sternly. I stood against her, a rabid wolf. Her words were each a bite mark on a heart, “I won’t leave until you tell me what you did!” Her towering posture had made that sentence that much scarier. I ran upstairs, and checked all the hiding spots. All the guns were there, of course, but I needed something to do. I made my bed, cleaned the downstairs, I even alphabetized the books on our shelf, reading pieces of a few that I thought might help. My hand shook more and more with every activity. I was trying to keep my mind away from the matters at hand and what I had just done, but it wasn’t much use.…

Just below my feet on the damp pavement, I caught a glimpse of what appeared to be the tall, slim shadow of someone behind me. The footsteps were slow at first, just about matching my own nervous strides, then began to speed up. Panicking, I quickened my pace in hopes of gaining some ground over who- or whatever was behind me on the dimly lit road that Halloween evening. Earlier that night I had attended a Halloween party where there were plenty of people in a well-lit area, all of whom were celebrating the eerie holiday with costumes, music, and food, but the whole time I couldn’t help but think about my walk home afterwards. What I saw and heard during that trek through the darkness was totally up to how well I managed to restrain my imagination…

This was probably the most difficult decision of my life: what bread to choose. Both under a dollar, which is all I had in my pocket at the moment, perks of being a poor college student. I held both breads in my hands for a second longer, throwing my head back and groaning slightly at not being able to get both. I finally picked the wheat, it only being $0.88 while the white being $0.94. I shuffled back to the counter, aggravated at myself for not finding a stable job yet…

A debilitating reassurance that the cruelty I'd grown accustomed to, knew no mercy.…
