The Qur’an: Source of influence for women in Islam
The word Quran translates to “recitation.” It is believed to have been revealed orally to Muhammad when he was 40 years old by the angel Gabriel. The Prophet Muhammad was born in the city of Makkah on the Arabian Peninsula in 570 C.E. He is known as ‘the Seal of the Prophets’. The Quran has been partitioned to 114 surahs from the longest to shortest and refers to the woman with a certain divine decree and eloquence. The Holy book demands that the woman is to be treated with respect and loved mentioning that the woman was similar to the man in the manner they were created however the woman is inferior to the man who was put in charge and the woman is not equal to the man. Religious status: a Muslim woman has religious obligations in observing her prayers each day, fasting, and pilgrimage similar to those of a man. However a woman can be exempted from fasting or the daily prayers when she is on her menstrual periods, when nursing a baby, when expectant, and 40 days after delivering a child. During the early days of Islam in the days of Prophet Muhammad and to date, both women and men go to the mosque for prayers; however it is optional for women to attend the Friday congregational prayers. The Muslim women are separated from the men during prayer times. The veil was subjected to all Muslim women at all times, nonetheless today; some women wear the veil only during times of prayer.
2. Social status: The Islamic law does not allow women to be married off without their consent. Women in Islam today, have a say on choosing their life partner, however the same law allows one man to marry up to four wives; an aspect that does not go well with some Muslim feminists.
