Alina has a desire to rescue Voichita, wanting her to abandon her faith and run away with her to Germany. On the other hand, Voichita is devoted to her religion, and wants only for Alina to be comforted by work, prayer, and spiritual discipline.
Beyond the Hills makes a valiant effort to level the playing field between male and female journeys of discovery in film, and thus promotes the equality that feminism stands for. Often times, a ‘feminist’ film in Hollywood may lead someone to think of a female protagonist who fights people two times their size and wins. The problem with this particular brand of feminism is that the women portrayed have to be more like men before they can be considered truly empowered women – having to flaunt weapons and muscles and abandon all sense of femininity they have in order to be viewed as
