The Witch of Edmonton, unlike many works of fiction, actually has a basis of truth; this play is loosely based on the witch trials that were occurring in England during the 1640s. Having insight into the reality behind this play will provide a better understanding of the character development of Elizabeth, and provide a basis of understanding of the culture within the setting. Robert Egger’s sinister horror film The Witch reflects this belief, foregrounding how motherhood defines Puritan women. While the film primarily traces how witchcraft rips apart Thomasin’s family, Egger weaves in how a violation of motherhood leads to witchcraft. The witch signifies a freedom from motherhood, making her an abject figure to Puritans. As a result, women who violate motherhood are monsterized as witches.…

The nature of the Salem Witch Trials was one of hysteria and fear. The Puritans of the Massachusetts New England colony were extraordinarily religious with a strain of Protestantism far more rigid than most, which was reflected in their reaction to supposed witchcraft. The pain of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials extended far beyond the nineteen executed and the five more who died in prison. Over a hundred more languished in jail for months on end, chained to the walls of dark, damp, and tiny jail cells, often with the knowledge that their children would be left without care. Farms were left unattended as family members travelled to visit the accused witches in the prisons and attend their trials.…

When the king became aware of this he sent the young man to jail and set a date for his trial. On the day of trial the princess learned purposely about the doors and knew where the woman would stand. As the boyfriend entered the scene with his eyes set on the princess, she subtlety pointed her fingers to the door on the right. The narrator wants to know who is behind this door, the lady or the tiger; given that the princess had spent so many painful nights weighing on her option before the…
