As Charles Dickens stated, “take nothing on it’s looks; take everything on evidence. There’s no better rule .” Evidence proves certain beliefs or propositions to be valid or not. It is critical to rely on evidence on all occasion to settle an answer in accordance to the fact. But is it really necessary? Evidence may not necessarily be used to reach a conclusion in certain areas, for example in ethics it is based off of people’s principles and behaviors, and in arts, it is dependent on the artist/s and audience’s thoughts and emotions. Both ethics and arts are swayed through people’s thoughts emotions, which cannot be taken in account as evidence. It is justified not through theoretical grounds, but rather through morals. The quality of an art piece depends on each person and there is no right or wrong answer. What is art? Art can be defined as the expression of human creative skill and imagination in a visual form, and appreciated for their beauty or the emotional power . A conclusion cannot be made about whether a certain artwork is considered good or bad since it is based off of one’s opinion, for example Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, “The Starry Night”, it personally makes me feel calm, I enjoy the colors used, and it is a pleasant painting. This opinion cannot be applied to everyone; it is not universal. The interpretation of an artwork is dependent on the use of memory, emotion, and imagination.
