Qualities of Ancient Warriors
It was a hard and selfless job to be a warrior in ancient times. The main qualities of warriors were similar and different when compared between many cultures. These cultures included the Macedonians, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Vikings, and the Japanese Samurais. Some qualities that needed to be possessed were pride, courage, determination, aggressiveness, and loyalty to successful in battle and in life.
The Macedonian army, under the command of Alexander the Great, had many conquests in Asia in the fourth century BCE. After eight years of fighting, his troops were ready to return home and refused to go any further. Alexander tried to convince them to go on to India, but they rejected this idea and started the journey home (Envisioning World Civilizations, 177). The army of Alexander the Great may have been lacking in the determination area, but they did have a lot of pride. Alexander’s speech to try to convince them to stay showed this. “…for well you know that hardship and danger are the price of glory, and that sweet is the savour of a life of courage and of deathless renown beyond the grave” (“Speech of Alexander the Great,” Envisioning World Civilizations, 178).
